Jim Cargill is getting on well with harvest at Coldstream Farm, Fettercairn, Aberdeenshire, despite the catchy weather.

“It’s been difficult, but we’ve been relatively lucky compared to farmers further north,” he said.

“We’ve got 24ha of spring barley left to do of 121ha, and yields have been good.”

Cutting at between 16% and 20% moisture, it was difficult to pinpoint the Concerto yields, but the quality was good and yields were reasonable, added Mr Cargill.

“We’ve got Propino left to cut, and with the wet weather it’s been battered down so some of the heads are pretty close to the ground – we’re starting to lose odd bits now.”

Glacier and Volume winter barley had yielded a pleasing 10t/ha, while Cracker oilseed rape had come off at 3.7t/ha.

As well as the spring barley, Mr Cargill had winter wheat left to cut. “We haven’t started the wheat yet – I want to finish the barley first,” he said.

“Some people have started cutting wheat in the area where it’s gone flat. Ours is still standing, but it is now offering to go down. It probably means it’s not such a good yield.”
