Harvest is progressing extremely well at Chessons Farm, Wadhurst, Sussex, where James Fuggle has just started combining winter wheat.

“We’ve done the oilseed rape and the oats, and started on Panorama yesterday (27 July),” he said.

“Yields have been very good – the Cassia winter barley averaged 8.5-9.7t/ha at 13% moisture, so we can’t complain at that.

“The straw was beautiful too; it’s just been phenomenal.”

Fashion oilseed rape had required a little bit of drying, but allowing for that would have yielded about 4t/ha, added Mr Fuggle.

“We’ve gone back to conventional tillage rather than minimum tillage and it seems to have really helped the oilseed rape.”

Despite very heavy thunderstorms causing localised flooding in the area, Mr Fuggle had escaped unscathed, so was still busy combining today.

“It’s very difficult to predict what the wheat will yield, but from what I can see it looks reasonable,” he said.

“I don’t think it will be as good as last year as we had some late disease – but so far so good.”
