So the Women's Institute opposes 'mega-farms'.
As a 20 year old bloke, I am fully prepared to concede that I don't fit particularly well into the WI's mandate. But surely I can't be the only one who's not surprised that this issue has been brought up by such an organization?
So I decided to do some digging, and I found this.
Now, having read this article in the Farmers Weekly, I was getting ready to blast the WI for being so far out of touch that they may as well be trying to tie their shoelaces using boxing gloves.
But if you read their official briefing notes, you will find a balanced argument that details the pros and cons of factory farming in a way that I actually find hard to better.
In an ideal world, we wouldn't need large-scale farming. Cows would live outside and we'd all turn organic.
But this isn't an ideal world and the industrialization of agriculture is an inevitable fact, needed to feed the world.
I wonder what the farmers of 50 years ago would have said to today's agricultural methods.
Things have changed and like any business, I hope they continue to do so.
