Why do so called celebrities allow pressure groups to make fools of them by allowing themselves to be used to publicise causes about which they know nothing?
In case you missed it Heather (Mills) McCartney recently took time off from her divorce proceedings from ex Beatle, Paul, to invade a Somerset pig farm alongside the vegetarian pressure group Viva. The purpose of this trespass was to "expose" farrowing crates as prisons for sows.
The sows can hardly move, she said, and they are unable to nuzzle their piglets. She then went on to explain, quite rightly, that the devices were intended to stop the sows from rolling onto the piglets and killing them. But more of them would survive in an open pen, she claimed.
Who told her such porkies? Why does she think farrowing crates were designed if that were true? Whoever it was failed to point out the heated areas alongside where piglets can go to avoid hypothermia in cold weather. They also omitted to explain that both mothers and piglets are moved to open pens after a few days as soon as the piglets are able to fend for themselves.
If Mrs McCartney had ever been to a pig farm she might have been able to make a semblance of a value judgement. As it was she became the puppet of the pressure group speaking words put into her mouth by its extremist members.
Sadly, many of those who read of her exploits will believe she understands what she is talking about. Like the pig farmer whose property was invaded such behaviour makes me angry, not least because in a free speech society there is little we can do to stop it. Except tell the truth and hope someone reads it.
