A sad and historic day

The last load of Yorkshire sugar beet was yesterday delivered to British Sugar's York plant.

The final 29.5t load was sent in by Helperby grower Richard Spilman, whose family have been growing the crop since the 1940s.

And for those of you wondering how Mr Spilman is adapting his business, he has already turned his attentions to fodder beet for the livestock sector and has also established crops of asparagus and carrots to supplement his soft fruit business.
