Journey into Africa - a bit further

So much has happened in the last few weeks I've neglected to get half the material I recorded in Africa out of my notebook.

So here's some more video footage - just to give a feel of what travelling through this tiny West African country feels like. The Gambia is a country of two halves and while crossing the River Gambia isn't quite as dramatic as the Congo or the Nile, it's still a rite of passage when visiting the country.

It's typically African - get as many people as will fit, as many vehicles as you can scrape together - preferably dangerously overloaded - throw in some peerless bureaucracy and be very, very late.

One year the ferry lay so low in the water the passengers and crew feared it would sink - so solved the issue by pushing a loaded coal lorry overboard.

It's still there - semi-submerged - which means the daily ferries still have to detour round it. In the video you'll see we approach the pontoon from a funny angle - that's why.
