An evening with the Young Farmers

Martha writes:

It is now the end of Snainton Young Farmers for the summer, so on Monday night we had a social evening.

We played golf, tennis pool and darts, they also had a jacuzzi which we could have a go in. It was a really good night and I shall miss not going for the summer.

We have broken up from school for the summer holidays - it was really sad because all of my friends have left to go to secondary school.

On the farm we have 750 pigs, which we have on a ‘bed and breakfast’ scheme, which means that we look after them for somebody else.

We provide the shed and straw and they supply the pigs and the food, at the moment we are halfway through a batch so my dad is hoping that we will be starting harvest very soon as we are running out of straw.

I like the pigs when they first come because they are only three weeks old and weigh about 7kgs so they are really small and cute, but when they are ready to go they are really big and ugly and weigh 100kgs.

I help my dad to get these ready for the local bacon factory which is really hard work and a lot of running around.
