Rain, lambs, geese and a new arrival

It's been a busy week for 13-year-old Felicity:

Last week my family and I visited the Royal Show. The food is great and it's good to see all the different animals.

We've ordered some more big chicken houses for some of our chickens. Dad has a 4X4 but we still got stuck in the mud in the car park because of the horrendous wet weather.

Back at the farm, the weather has damaged some of the crops so my father and I went to have a look at the fields. Due to the weather we have also lost a sheep.

Home from France

Felicity writes:

I have been away on a school trip with my friends to the south of France - it was great fun and it had great shopping!

The weather is rather a shock as it was 38 degrees in France and it was thundering in England.

The crops are feeling the brunt of the weather and many fields have dropped.

The little goslings were let out to live in the fields. Also the oilseed rape has been swaft (this means it was cut, laid in rows and left to dry.)

The turkeys arrive

Felicity writes:

On the farm the one-day old turkeys chicks were picked up from a Norfolk farm ready us to raise ready for Christmas.

The oilseed rape from the field has been harvested and taken into the farm buildings. It has to be dried out due to the wetness of the land.

The older farm barns near to my house are being converted into useful buildings, one of the rooms is going to be used as Thurleigh's sorting office, as the local post office is closing down.

We saved a goose's life

goose.JPG

Felicity writes:

On the farm the first of the hay has been cut and sold, the first of the raspberries and pinks have also come out.

Me and my sister also saved a goose after a fox attack. We made it a pen and put some water and food in there for it and named it Coco.

We also went to the seaside, and enjoyed the nice weather!

The first rasberries

Felicity writes:

On the farm we have been hay making, but the combine has been broken so we weren't able to start combining as soon as we would have liked.

The turkeys are settling in well and we are starting to get a few punnets of raspberries.

Due to the foot-and-mouth, some of the animals that were supposed to go to market last week were not allowed.

Pie and chutney

Felicity writes:

On the farm we had started combining, but the combine broke!

The chickens had their wings clipped and had foot rings put on for them so they are ready for their new chicken house.

The turkeys had to have some medication for a cold and some multivitamin medication.

This week enough blackberries have ripened for me and my sister to pick for a pie and plums for some chutney.

The sweetcorn starts

Felicity writes:

On the farm the rest of the corn has been harvested and the oilseed rape ground has been cultivated.

All the flowers are wilting on the farm, and will soon die but the sweetcorn is just starting to come out.

Visiting Castleton

Felicity writes:

We have been spreading the muck on the fields.

A few of the sheep have been suffering from strike so we keep having to buy more medicine.

The chickens have now been let out of their new home and are very happy.

I've also been on a school trip to Castleton in Derbyshire, we were very lucky because it was very sunny and we went down into one of the many Blue John mines!

Little cuties...

Felicity writes:

This week on the farm we received 50 ducks at the point of lay and some little ducklings and chicks. They are so cute!

The hay making has finished and is all being stacked, it is great fun to climb on them when an adult is around and says it's safe and see the surrounding countryside.

My mums' new puppies have celebrated their 12-week-old birthday. They are Welsh Springer Spaniels and are called Dotty and Ralph. We have also finished drilling the wheat.

Sign of the times

Felicity writes:

This week on the farm we have been getting ready for Christmas, and making signs!

Dolly, the donkey has had a sprained ankle and had to be put in the stable to rest with her daughter Mabel.
