I am told that is the sort of title to attract a few more imaginary readers. We are in the middle of a new building project and I need some more hardcore.
A lot of farmers envy these South Lincolnshire soils which are absurdly deep and free of stones. The only trouble is that if we need any stone for building work it has to be hauled miles. This and the aggregate tax have made hardcore and concrete very expensive.
It wasn't a problem for farmers around here in the past. If you wanted to extend your yard around here in the 1960's it seems you simply bulldosed down a Georgian farmhouse and used the rubble.
This explains the depressing state of affairs with the architecture around here. Still at least most of the farms have got large areas of hard standing.
We are not so fortunate. Our premises are still too small for the amount of produce that we are trying to handle. I have could impose a Red Ken-style congestion charge to discourage lorries from entering the premises but I fear it could be a poor commercial decision.
So I'm going to have to keep extending as I can afford it. I am a huge fan of operating from a clean concreted yard but the cost (both financially and environmentally) of laying large areas of new concrete is difficult to justify. Has anyone got any suggestions for a cheaper and greener alternative?
