It has been raining nearly all day. The forecast said fine today.
Back in the day only me and Dad worked here. We used to have a wet day procedure then...
1. Drink a gallon of coffee,
2. Start clearing out the workshop,
3. Disagree about what we could and couldn't throw away,
4. Have an unpleasant argument,
5. Go our separate ways. (Me for a haircut, Dad for another coffee).
I believe that this is fairly standard practice on a family farm. We have had to change our ways since the business has grown. There are about 30 of us working here at the moment. We seem to have to keep going whatever the weather now. The potato orders have been higher than we expected today and the volume of flowers is beginning to increase. Everyone was in fair spirits considering.
The flowers have taken a bit of a battering in the rain. There will be some losses but we are managing to maintain decent quality at the moment. The supermarket orders have been very low today, there was a lame excuse floating around from one of the packers about someone forgetting to enter something on a system. Their order forecasting is almost as bad as the Met Office.
With supermarkets everything revolves around "a system" and ithis means inflexibility and slow response times. Seasonal British products are around for a preciously short time so these "systems" can dangerously impact on the amount of time that you are on the shelf.
All in all not a fun day. I'm probably just grumpy because I've got "big hair" and I haven't had time to sneak off for a haircut.
