Upbeat again

I've cheered up since the last entry. We hit a bit of a low with that one didn't we, my imaginary friends. I am sure that I have explained before how difficult I always find July. It is the bottom of the cashflow in our financial cycle and the workload, the weather and its associated stresses have made these entries rather less imaginative than I would like them to be.

I am in a much more earnest state of mind that usual because...

Good morning, imaginary readers. Sorry it's been a while.

It's been a busy week week again. A mysterious bug has worked its way through the Naylor family so none of us has been at peak performance.

So there is a great deal to tell you about...

A quick entry for you, it is...

Me and my big, fat...

I have spent quite a bit of time on a tractor seat carting daffodil bulbs in the last week.

Our Case tractors have a really annoying habit of beeping in the most shrill and irritating way if you get off the seat without the handbrake on. It is sending me nuts.

This beeping might be regarded as a safety feature on a Welsh hill farm but I am in the flatest county in Britain. Would it perhaps be over dramatic to say that the beeping is ruining my life?

When I was in New Zealand I met a farmer who had a Toyota Hilux that beeped if he didn't plug his seat belt in. He got go fed up with it that one day he got out his knife and cut the seat belt in half, removed the clip and then left it plugged into the socket permanantly. You have to admire his rugged reaction to being bossed around by a car (if not his flippant attitude to road safety).

If among my imaginary readership is The Head of Annoying Additions - Case Tractors (GB), please bear in mind that this beeping was one of the main reasons that we bought a John Deere last time we changed a tractor and it is constantly reminding us to consider doing the same thing next time.

(This story) should worry us all and not just...

Daffodils

Things are finally getting a bit drier and we have finally made a start on the daffodil harvest today. We are two weeks behind schedule already.

The ground is very wet but fortunately we are on a very fine silt field this year. The first day of a new job is usually pretty chaotic, today we have needed visits from our electrician, the Case mechanic, the Grimme dealer and the Herbert engineer. Everything is running smoothly now and we hope to make decent progress tomorrow.

Was hoping to be able to write an amusing entry today but I can't do it. I worked all day yesterday and I feel shattered today, I just looked in the mirror and my face looks like a smacked bottom.

I always find this time of year high-pressured. If you compare the farming year here to swimming the Atlantic, actually let's say the Pacific, it's like swimming the Pacific with your boots and a dressing gown on. If you make that comparison, then July is the point when you are farthest from either shore.

Our new daffodil bulb drying system is finally operational. The fans looked enormous and I was terrified that when we switched them on they would inhale all the local wildlife and ...
