Llandovery saw an end of an era last week as the last breeding animal from the Pengelli herd went under the hammer at the Welsh Black Cattle Society’s sale of pedigree cattle.
The two year-old home bred bull Pengelli Cassius was sold by 81 year-old Mrs Jean Edwards of Dolau Ganol, Ffarmers, Llanwrda in Carmarthenshire for 3500gns to her neighbour J A Jones.

Taking the overall male championship was Rhuddel Kracker, a 19 month old polled bull from Colin and Rhian Evans Nant– y –Moch Gwynfe, and was bought by David Sands, Pencader for 2000gns.

The overall championship went to the maiden heifer Traws Iona 9 (and my personal favourite of the day!), bred by W D Tudor and exhibited by Emily Evans Oswestry, Iona sold for 1300gns to a new face to the Society, Mark Swistern, Llanmorlais, Gower.

At 1150gns, Cennen Peggy 68 was the next highest priced heifer this time from Messers J R and D H Francis,Carmarthenshire. She was bought by Mr Thomas, Y Rhos, Cardigan.
The day’s activities also included the reduction sale of the Orielton herd from Messers B G and M Bateman, Huddleton, Pembrokeshire.
Consisting of 45 in-calf pedigree cows, they averaged 537gns a head.
Averages: 4 bulls 1900gns; 62 females 616gns (Clee, Tompkinson and Francis).
