Hot competition for lambs at Hexham

There was plenty of choice for lamb buyers at Hexham and Northern Marts this week, with 1854 lambs forward.

 

Competition was hot as another buyer was forward to compete for the best lambs. And paying top price in the end was Messrs A Wright and Son, Meat Wholesalers from Lincolnshire.  163.9p/kg was paid for a pen of Charollais cross Texel lambs with superb conformation from Middle Horsleyhope.

 

Heavy lambs were slightly easier on the week selling to £68 for Texel cross from Prospect Hill. Suffolk crosses also topped above the £60 barrier at £61.50 from Thornton Tower.

 

Well fleshed prime hoggs sold to £49.50. While cast ewes and rams topped at £70 for Suffolk cross ewes from Flotterton.

 

Sale average 133.1p/kg and £54.18/head, a £6.33 improvement on the year.

 

Prime cattle at Hexham saw prices topping at £1104.89 and £1086.61 for Limousin heifers from Shield Farm. Blonde heifers made £1075.33 also from Shield farm, with Charolais heifers making £988.07 from Flotterton.

 

Over thirty month animals topped at £969 and £921.71 for Limousin from High town. Luing made £868.60 from Kirkheaton and Galloways £826.54 from Hepple Hill.
