Dairy trade bucked the recent trend of falling cow values at the dispersal of the Mays herd at Selmeston earlier this week.
Auctioneer Roger Walters of South East Marts reports buyers from as far afield as Devon and Cumbria in attendance looking for cows ready to put milk in the tank immediately.
Leading the trade on the day was Mays Hattie, a MOET Plymouth daughter. Having calved on 16 September Hattie sold at £3000 having averaged 11,100 in her first three lactations and with a daily yield of about 60 litres. Buyers for this one were Messrs R C and J L Pickering.
Next best was Mays Maystar 3, a cow which gave more than 11,500 in her first two lactations. This one sold to Messrs Goddard, Great Chart, Ashford.
Overall fouth lactation and younger cattle averaged £1803.75, while the group of 38 heifers aged 13 to 15 months old levelled at £1138.
