Top EBV heifers from the high performance Rawburn herd dominated the "Best of Blacks in the Borders" sale of Aberdeen-Angus females at St Boswells.

Leading buyer was Yorkshire-based Gordon Brooke, whose five purchases included the top four prices of 11,000gns, 6500gns and 6000gns (twice). Mr Brooke is building up a new Aberdeen-Angus herd at Linton Wold Farm, Malton.

His top bid was for the two year old heifer, Rawburn Ebony F618, described by seller, John Elliot, as the best female ever to be released from the Rawburn herd which is based at Roxburgh Mains, Kelso.

Sire by the Darlene Cruz son, Rawburn Lord Ross C216, the heifer is in the top 1% of the breed for 200 and 600 day growth with an impressive +4.8 for eye muscle area and a terminal index of 37. She was sold in calf to the £32,500 Rawburn Rommel which is shared with the Idvies herd.

Mr Brooke's 6500gns purchase was the stylish Rawburn Extra Edition D285 daughter, Rawburn Bluebottle F624. Extra Edition was the top bull calf in Rawburn's 2004 crop but was injured after one season.

Another Lord Ross daughter, Rawburn Miss Princess F593, realised 6000gns, also to Mr Brooke, who also paid the same price for the two year old, Galawater Bonita F194, from Jim Logan, Pirntaton, Galashiels. This heifer is a daughter of Rawburn Echester who ranks number one for eye muscle at +6.5 and is in the top 5% in both the terminal and self replacing indexes.

Irish buyer, Michael Sheahan, Co Limerick, paid the next highest price of 5000gns for the yearling, Duncanziemere Jody G263, from Alistair Clark, Cumnock, Ayrshire. Sired by the former Royal Highland Show champion, Newcairnie Pastor.
