A top price of 20,000gns for the choice of any animal in the noted Overside herd and a record average of £5029 marked another successful Borderway Black and White sale offering Holstein and Jersey genetics at Carlisle recently.
"Yet again a wonderful sale and while cash may be tight we saw some generous bidding throughout the day with only a handful of lots not meeting their reserve," commented Edward Brown who instigated the sale for auctioneers Harrison and Hetherington 22 years ago.
It was half-way through the day that the crowd were faced with an unusual but tempting opportunity to pick any animal from Hugh Neilson's successful 250-cow Overside Holstein herd based at Strathaven, Lanarkshire.
With two catalogue pages devoted to some of the herd's most noted cows, bidding finally settled at 20,000gns when well known Cumbria black and white enthusiasts Alan and Christine Watson from Cockermouth made the winning call. The Watson's have a month to pick their prize asset.
And it was the next lot in the ring that fared almost as well when the Dennison family from Ulverston sold a 12-month-old Shottle heifer to fellow Cumbrian Colin Dent at 19,000gns. Denmire Shottle Marie 80 (PLI +£209 and PIN +£43) is an ET-bred daughter of Denmire Storm Marie Ex94-3 (6yr) who has twice achieved well over 15,000kg from her six lactations.
This calf is full sister to the 17,000gns Denmire Shottle Marie 54 and has bothers Megastar and Martian in the Cogent and Genus studs, respectively. She was offered with unconditional embryo contract interest from Cogent and Genus.
Tegan Bolton Lila (PLI+£145 and PIN +£38) from Dyfed-based breeders D and G Davies made 18,000gns. By Sandy-Valley Bolton and out of Calbrett Shottle Lela, this six-month-old calf has the famous Lylehaven Lila - a cow that made $1,150,000 at the Triple Crown sale in 2005 - as grand-dam. Buyers were A Bunting and Son, Midtown, Dumfries.
Heading back to Scotland was the January 2008-bred heifer Nethervale Goldwyn Tabby (PLI +£89 and PIN +£13) from W Scott and Co, Largs, Ayrshire. Claimed at 13,000gns by Jim Currie, Carlinside, Lanark, she is out of Veazland-R Bstar Tabby who is a Blackstar daughter with a fistful of top wins in Canada and the USA.
Best of the red and whites on offer was another entry from the Tegan herd. The Davies' Tegan Advent Mahogany Rox Red (PLI +£86 and PLI +£15) is a January 2008-bred heifer by KHW Kite Advent Red and out of the 15,444kg Scientific Mahogany Red. This family goes back to the noted Glenridge Citation Roxy. The heifer was bought for 11,000gns by Ayrshire breeder R M Templeton from Mauchline.
There were two 10,000gns bids. The Booth family from Austwick, Lancaster sold its 13-month-old heifer Feizor Shottle L Melody (PLI+£128 and PIN +£22) to Wills Bros, Cornwall. And Ian and Mark Mallinson at Armathwaite, Carlisle, sold the 2007 All-Britain heifer Carhall Goldwyn Beth (PLI +£149 and PIN +£32) to the Beth Syndicate, Penrith, Cumbria.
Jersey enthusiast Ashley Fleming from Co Down, Northern Ireland, offered the pick of any of the 2008-bred heifers from his well known Potterswalls Jersey herd achieving 5000gns from fellow Northern Ireland breeder Michael Booth.
Averages: 61 Holsteins £5097 and three Jerseys £3640. (Harrison and Hetherington).
