Old season lamb trade has remained firm in the first sales of the week, with the 3486 forward at Carlisle keenly sought after by 12 separate buyers and the overall average levelling at 167.38p/kg.

But, like last week the top price failed to reach the mystical £100/head and the best price achieved was a £95.50 bid for a pen of 12 Texels from Ronnie Mark of Sunnygill Farm. The same vendor also sold at £92.50, while the best Beltex made up to £90 for entries from Snade Farm.

Top price/kg also went to Texel-sired entries, with Messrs T Bell of Mosshill Farm taking a 217p/kg bid.

Meanwhile in the south west the best price recorded at Exeter on Monday was an £85/head bid for heavy hoggs from Mr G Tripp. Overall the 890 hoggets forward averaged 160.2p/kg or £70.03/head. Additionally, the first of the new season lambs were out at Exeter and sold for £70.50/head or 175p/kg
