Ols season lamb trade in the north of England continues to enjoy a post New Year surge, with both Hexham andd Kirkby Stephen marts yesterday recording prices in excess of £90.

At Hexham the top call of £95 came for heavyweight Suffolk crosses freom East Knitsley. But the auctioneers report that overall the trade was easier than last week, with many pens in the £70-80/head range.

"However, the trade was still highly satisfactory with well fleshed quality sheep selling freely in excess of 160p/kg to a top of 175.6p/kg for Texel crosses."

At Kirkby Stephen yesterday evening a total of £1693 sheep were sold with nine buyers ringside to bid for stock. Top price was £93.50 for Texel crosses from W Natrass of Garrigill, while a 170.7p/kg bid was the top price/kg. This came for Beltex crosses from Messrs R Allinson, Winton.
