Notwen Holsteins hit 2700gns peak at Carlisle

The dispersal of the Notwen herd of Holsteins for Gordon MacArthur at Carlisle's Borderway Mart last Wednesday produced a top call of 2700gns and a healthy average for the milking herd of £1108.86.

Heading the trade was Notwen Pea Hen 14, a September 2006-born daughter of Weeton Orion. Due in May to Mayne Horizon and out of a dam which gave more than 10,000litres in her second, Pea Hen 14 sold to Greentower Farms, Cartland, Lanark.

At 2200gns was Notwen Chantal 49, another Weeton Orion daughter. Again September 2006-born, Chantal 49 calved in February and sold to W C and D J Copland, Ecclefechan, Lockerbie.

Also at that value was Notwen Pansy 132, another Weeton Orion daughter. Again September 2006-born, Pansy 132 gave 1038 litres in the first 34 days of her heifer lacation and sold to Mar Farmers, Dunragit, Stranraer.

The third 2200gns sale came when February 2007-born Notwen Mairi 46 sold to Greentower Farms. Due in May to Mayne Horizon and by Stardale Saha, she is out of Notwen Mairi 42 which gave 8719litres in her first lactation.

Selling at 2150gns was Notwen Hettie, a Stardale Rouble daughter. She sold to Mr Wallbank, Sallon House Farm, Higher Walton.

Two sold at 2100gns, the first of which was another Stardale Rouble daughter, Notwen Olive 103. Out of a dam which gave 8806 in her first lactation, Olive sold to Messrs Copland.

The second transaction at this figure came when Greentower Farms bought Notwen Nell 122, a Gillette Carlton daughter. Calved in August last year and having given 4976 in 199 days of her second lactation, she was served on 19 March by Stardale Saha.

Averages; 152 cows and milking heifers £1108.86, 16 in-calf heifers £1794.84, 54 Maiden heifers £875.97, 64 heifer calves £415.57.
