A wealtth of leading Limousin genetics were up for sale last Friday at the dispersal of Bernard Mairs Bearbrook herd of Limousins at Moira, Northern Ireland.
Topping the sale was one of the herd's best show performers, 13 year-old Ronick Money. Bred by Ron Dick in his Ronick herd, Stirling, Money is by Ronick Gains and out of Broadmeadows Cannon daughter Roncik Honey. She sold at 5400gns to Dougie McBeath and Sarah-Jane Jessop for their Springsett herd, Scotland.
Also at this money was Money's daughter Roncik Valueless. By Ronick Riogrande, Valueless had been shown successfully and sold to Moses Irwin, Fintona, suckling a bull calf by Ronick Argos.
Next best call was a 5200gns sale for Ronick Violist. This four year old cow was seven months in calf to Greensons Gigolo and is also by Ronick Riogrande. She sold to Kenny Veitch, Lisbellaw.
Then at 4500gns was Pennys Ulay. Bred by P Walker, Driffield, Yorkshire, this one sold with a heifer calf at foot by Ronick Iceman and was in-calf to Ronick Argos. By Scorboro Olympian, she joins Sean McGeehan, Fivemiletown. And at 4000gns Glarryford Bee, a Samy daughter, sold in-calf to Ronick Argos to Steve McGookin, Carrickfergus.
A 3100gns bid secured Wilodge Navette for John O'Reilly, Eire. She is by Cannon and out of a Talent daughter and sold in calf to Ronick Argos, having been bought by 11,500gns at the ILC sale in 2004.
Some of the most sought after lots in the sale though were straws of semen, notably Gigolo semen and 21 straws from this respected sire sold for 550gns apiece to an undisclosed buyer. Cannon semen, meanwhile, netted 150gns/straw.

Anyone taking bets on who bought the Gigolo semen? I've narrowed down to three suspisions??
I'd say its heading back across the water to northern Scotland, but I could be wrong. If it stayed in Ulster there's probably only one place its gone and we all know where that would be. Look's like my 800gns prediction was a tad optimistic after all!
£12,127.50 for 21 straws, thats some going, personally I'd rather see that money standing on 4 legs in a field, and insured! if 60% result in a calving, thats 12 calves costing over £1010 before they hit the ground!
Still, if they all end up like Queenshead Altea its bloody cheap!
I think I'd like that amount cash on more than four legs, eight or perhaps even 12! But as you say if it results in calves of the qulaity we all know Gigolo's capable of it will look cheap in the long-run. The question is will be buyer be hoping for bull or heifer calves?
got an email from the lim society advertsing your site last night, looking forward to seeing a report from the female trade on friday, and will probably get up their on saturday, im particularly interested in how westside ulrica gets on, her sire jupiter has left some real good heifers in our own herd and hes out of a very goof female line
Blimey, I knew there was a link on the Lim site to Taking Stock, but I didn't realise they were going to email members too, look's like I owe someone a drink. Ulrica certainly will be interesting, she's carrying a good embryo too. Happy to bid on her for you if you like Limmy Man!
As you previously asked me limmy man....whats your prefix? who are you.... you're obviously a much better thought of member of the society than me, I never got that email!.... email envy...sign of the times
I got an e mail as well. Just sign up the the Limousin society mailing list. Looking forward to the coverage tomorrow. Will hopefully ease the pain of being stuck in work on a bank holiday Friday! Best of luck to all involved!
Be warned, I won't be there to cover the judging during the day tomorrow, but will be there for the sale of females and will let you have the show results as soon as I can.
So that means I'll actually have to do some work! Will need to find another means of constructive distraction instead so until the RSS feeds start popping in to the inbox!
H&H are usually pretty good at getting results on their website pronto - I know it's not the same as the trusty Fwi but provided the selling action is covered I'm happy. That's where all the excitement is!
