October 2009 Archives

After nine hours of judging cattle judge Donald MacPherson, Berwick on Tweed, finally picked his overall champion which went to young handler, Llion Jones, son of Tecwyn Jones, North Wales. It was their heifer Black Beauty bred by his neighbour Trefor Jones, Caernafon that secured the silverware.

TS Ag Expo Comm Champ RESIZE.jpgTaking the reserve title was Gerwyn Jones, north Wales with Miss Unique, a Limousin cross heifer. She was bought in a private sale this spring and is her first show out.

Taking champion steer title was Graham Jones with Sooty a British Blue cross steer. In reserve was Elfed Williams, with King Kong a Limousin cross steer, bred  by A and J Powell, Powys.

It wasn't an easy task for sheep judge Granville Colegrave, Perthshire with more than 100 entries forward. But it was a pair of Beltex lambs that took the winning trophy for Andrew and Becky Bishop, Gloucestershire. This pair was overall champion of the Continental/Down lambs class here today and also won supreme title at Countryside Live last week and are both by the same sire.

No surprises as store and breeding cattle demand soars

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

It seems that no matter which market report I pick up at the moment the demand for store and beef breeding cattle is unsatiable. Quite simply there don't seem to be enough to go around and confidence in the future of the sector is riding high.

Following on from my brief report from Thainestone on Tuesday, a more detailed look at the sale figures show trade for in-calf heifers peaking at £3400 for a British Blue cross heifer due to calve in the spring from Harry Emslie. This was then backed up by a call of £2700 for a purebred Limousin, while Limousin crosses were topped at £2250 for another from the Emslie team.

Heifers with calves at foot were equally sought after, selling to a top of £1950 for a Simmental cross with a heifer calf at foot.

Moving to the recent suckled calf sales, St Boswells on Wednesday saw trade average197.1p/kg for the steers on offer, while heifers levelled the day at 176.5p/kg. The most notable thing about these prices being the rise in prices seen in 12 months, steers were 48.3p/kg up on last year, while heifers returned an average up by some 46p on 2008. Top price of the sale was a £1200 bid for the show champion, a Limousin cross steer from J Anderson and Son, Lauder, which weighed in at 340kg.

And, unsurprisingly to anyone with any knowledge of the beef sector and its recent fortunes, EBLEX has today issued figures which show a 5% drop in calf registrations by beef breed sires. Overall the proportion of beef sired calves fell to less than 70% of the annual calf crop.

The sharpest drop in numbers was seen in the main beef breeds used for AI in dairy herds  -Limousin and British Blue - with these breeds accounting for nearly two thirds of the annual beef-sired calf decline.

Indeed, of the majorr breeds the only one not showing a fall in popularity was the Aberdeen-Angus. But the Continental breeds still dominate the overall rankings, with 22% of all calves being by Limousin sires and 10% by Charolais.

It is though only telling us what we already knew and merely helps to explain the superb trade being seen for quality cattle across the UK at the moment.

It was Appleby breeders, Jonathan Bellas and Son taking overall British Blue champion title with his female heifer Croftends Emma. Out of Croftends Belle and by Empire D'Ochain this one is a full sister to Highland Show Champion, Black Beauty.

Royal Lancashire Show shuts up shop

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

The Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society has admitted defeat in its attempts to resurrect the Royal Lancashire Show in 2010.

Having cancelled the show for a variety of reasons in 2007, 2008 and 2009, the Society says in a statement on its website that it has accepted defeat in its attempts to create a 2010 Royal Lancs Show.

It lays the blame for the cancellation of next year's show door of Ribble Valley Borough Council which refused to allow a proposed amendment to a previous traffic plan for the event.

A spokesman said "everything now looks bleak and it is very difficult to see any possibility of another Royal Lancashire Show being held at anytime in the foreseeable future."

This sale of 172 aged and shearling rams produced a top price of £8000 and saw the shearling average rise by £174.

It was a best ever price for Richard Hird who runs his flock at Baldersdale, Barnard Castle. "He's by a £5000 Mossdale tup and his grandfather made £35,000 at Kirkby Stephen. His dam was by a tup bred by Patrick Sowerby," said Mr Hird. The ram was bought by Alan Coates, Richmond.

All set for Charolais sale at Stirling

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

The final day here at Stirling will see the Charolais come under the hammer and I have no doubt they'll enjoy the best trade of the week. There is an exceptional show of bulls on offer with quality in every class judged yesterday, in fact the quality is so good that its near impossible to predict where the money will go today.

I still rate Bill Bruce's Balmyle team and Anne MacPherson's champion bull is sure to get a good trade too. Beyond that no doubt Thrunton will sell well and after that its anybody's day from what I've seen. Without a doubt these Charolais are the pick of the week, watch out for an average in the region of £6000...

In the meantime I've uploaded a picture gallery of all the winners and high prices so far, you can see them here

Second day of Stirling sales underway

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Well, after a late finish last night the second day of this week's bull sales at Stirling has dawned and judging has been underway in the Simmentals for more than an hour already.

The general feeling from yesterday was that both the Angus and Limousins enjoyed trades which were better than expected with commercial men still digging deep enough to secure the bulls they wanted, in many cases competing with pedigree buyers to get them.

As for the Simmentals today, its safe to say I expect a lot more of the same, with solid bulls making solid money, although I'm not predicting any flyers. The Charolais tomorrow could be a different story with a Balmyle bull from Bill Bruce attracting plenty of attention so far.

First day of Stirling all wrapped up

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Well, that's the first day of the bull sales in its new home all done and dusted and overall its been a successful day with Angus to 15,000gns and Lims to 12,000gns and a better trade for the Lims than many, including breed chairman Jim Bloom expected.

The new mart is fit for the purpose, the only criticism being it is maybe a tight squeeze for the October sales when all the breeds are in together, hopefully for February there will be a bit more space.

That's me done for today, its pie and pint time, but be sure we'll be back here tomorrow to bring you all the action ringside.

Time will tell if the late start for the Lims has any affect on trade, it certainly hasn't deterred the crowds at the beginning of the sale.

Wet morning greets first day at Stirling

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks

The first morning of the bull sales here at Striling has been met by rain, with more of the same set to come throughout the day.

However, hopefully that won't dampen the trade for the breeds on sale today - Aberdeen Angus, Beef Shorthorns and Limousins. Although, having said that, there are few bulls of those breeds in the lines which look set to make big money.

Of the Angus the picks are the National Show champion from Ewan Brewis, Eastfield Black Bandit, the best of the string Michael and Graeme Massie, Blelack Krackerjack Lad, Perkhill Emperor from Alex and Philippa Davie which was champion bull at lst year's Black Beauty Bonanza and Deveron Lionheart from Hamish Sclater, which was reserve bull at the same event.

There is very little to catch the eye in the Lim lines though. Angus judging gets underway at 8.30 this morning, so come back later for updates on progress.

Final few Carlisle Limousin prices

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks

Here are the last couple of high prices from the trade here at Carlisle, making 10,500gns was Homebyres Dixon from John Logan, this is a Homebyres Vanhee son out of Homebyres Topaz, a Sarkley Pepsi daughter. This one was subject to a 10,000gns maiden bid but then the opening bidder dropped out rapidly once their first call was topped.

Then at 8000gns was Cowin Destiny from Dyfan and Carol James. This is an Objat son out of Cowin Valmai, an Ionesco daughter.

It has certainly been a strong trading day with the 141 bulls sold levelling through at £5742, a highly respectable average for an autumn sale, bearing in mind the tendancy for most buyers to purchase at the spring sales.

Overall the bulls with the quality and scope to do the business for their future owners were the ones in demand from the ringside. Interestingly all three reserve section champions made more then the animals which stood above them in the show classes yesterday, but that's often the way of these things.

Now its on to Stirling for the first bull sales in the new venue, check back tomorrow for my first thoughts on the offering and the facilities there.

Crowds gathering for Carlisle Limousin sale

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

With less than ten minutes to go until the official start time for selling here at Carlisle this morning the market is buzzing with activity as potential buyers fill the pens looking for their next stock bull and there is certainly plenty for them to pick from.

Many reckon this is the best show of bulls here for some time and I'd be inclined to agree, although there are still several with mobility problems which could prove problematic in the long-term.

That said I can see there being a real solid trade here today with plenty of commercial men looking for new stock bulls and the beef trade providing them enough confidence to push on and buy the bulls they want. Unlike this time last year I can't see David Tomlinson needing a bottle of scotch to get trade going, in fact he's so confident that the only liquid refreshment he's offering today is Diet Coke - that's it Tommo, think of your figure!!

Juniors dominate Carlisle Limousin judging

| 7 Comments | No TrackBacks

Well, we made it here to Carlisle just in the nick of time this afternoon to see the last class of Limousin junior bulls and the overall championship and it proved to be excellent timing with Bob Adam finding both his junior champion and the reserve from the last class and this duo then went on to stand overall and reserve overall respectively.

It was the last bull in the book, Kaprico Davelle from Carol Stafford which took the overall title, with Wilodge Dallagio from Christine Williams standing reserve.

Davelle, an August 2008-born Wilodge Tonka son is out of Kaprico Ravelle is a grandson of Gigolo on his maternal side and has a beef value of +23.

Dallagio, meanwhile, is by Wilodge Vantastic and out of Sarkley Bellola, a Cloughhead Lord daughter which was bought for 24,000gns two years ago. He has a beef value of +28.

Standing senior champion was Rosecroft Dynamite from David and Anne Wheeler. This is a Ryedale Paragon son out of a Ferry daughter and has a beef value of +39. Reserve senior was Procters Deloite, a Haltcliffe Vermount son from Procters Farms. This one is out of Tunnelby Ulicia, a Ryedale Napoleon son and has a beef value of +38.

Taking the intermediate championship was the Quick family with Loosebeare Diver. This Haltcliffe Anzac son is out of Loosebeare Tolly and goes back to Cannon on his dam's side. He has a beef value of +42. Reserve spot in the intermediates was again claimed by the Procters Team, this time with March 2008-born Procters Duvalier. This is another Vermount son and is out of Procters Vabrielle, a Greenwell Ronick daughter.

Overall it looks to be a strong show of bulls in the lines ready for tomorrow and if the crowd round the ring in the morning is a big as that at judging today it'll be a cracking trade. I've not had a proper look through the lines to make many picks, but will try and get a good look before selling tomorrow to let you know my thoughts.

Latinos learning to love British semen

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Following the opening of the doors to the UK earlier this year the first British semen has hit the South American country's shores thanks to UK Sire Services.

With more than 20m doses of semen imported into Brazil each year the country has the opportunity to be a major market for UK genetics, says the company's Rob Wills. "The consignment includes Aberdeen-Angus, Beef Shorthorn, Devon, Hereford, Belted Galloway and Jersey semen. And its the beef breeds where there is a real chance for the UK to stake a claim.

"Currently most semen is imported from the USA where cattle are grain fed and hormone treated. However, Brazil's industry operates pasture-based systems more akin to the UK, so UK genetics should be better suited to their situation," he said.

Carlisle Charolais preview

Next week's offering of Charolais at Carlisle may not be the largest gathering of the breed this year, but with 77 bulls and 51 females on offer there's no doubting the quality of some of the lots on offer.

Flicking through the catalogue earlier several entries caught my eye among the bulls on offer, the first of which is GretnaHouse Dick from Alistair Houston. He's a Doonally New son out of Mortimers Foxy and is full brother to 8000gns bull Gretnahouse Umpire. And the next lot Alsnow Decision from Alan Lawson is also of interest, combining Blelack breeding on both sides of his pedigree. He's by Blelack Roger, sire of bulls to 10,000gns and out of Blelack Maxine, dam of 17,000gns bull Alsnow Almighty.

Anyone looking for a sire with figures will be drawn to Whitecliffe Designerbull, a Mowbraypark Paramount son with a terminal sire index of 46 and a self replacing index of 48. He's out of Whitecliffe Union, a daughter of the now legendary Dingle Hoffmeister.

And Hamish Goldie has another with good figures in the form of Goldies Dolphin, a son of homebred sire Goldies Ambassador. He's out of Goldies Anita, a Blelack Rustic daughter and has a TSI of 38 and an SRI of 40.

Elsewhere my eye is drawn to Swalesmoor Domino, an Ellerton Alberto and out of Swalesmoor April which was junior female champion at the Highland in 2006. He has figures of 35 and 41 respectively.

This is of course only a very brief selection of the bulls on offer and I'm bound to have missed something in the catalogue, so feel free to add to the list....

Wilodge bulls make film debut

| 13 Comments | No TrackBacks

The catalogue for October's sale of Limousins at Carlisle may not have hit your doormat yet, but some of the eagle-eyed web watchers among you may well have already seen a sneak preview of three of the bulls on offer from the Wilodge herd.

Making full use of modern technology, videos of the Wilodge team of bulls are now available to view on the recently launched Wilodge website. The videos may not rival Quentin Tarantino's efforts, but there's no doubting you get to see all you need to. And I suspect the stars were easier to work with than Hollywood A listers!

This is certainly a step forward for bull marketing and is sure to generate plenty of added interest before the sale. Congratulations to all involved.

East of England Winter Stock Festival entries due soon

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks

Its that time of year when entry forms for the winter fairs are lingering on desks waiting to be filled out. But anyone wanting to exhibit at this year's East of England Winter Stock Festival will need to act quickly as entries close on Monday.

As well as the usual primestock classes the East of England Winter Stock Festival includes sections for pedigree stock too, providing southern and midlands-based breeders with a valuable outlet for quality stock without the expense od travelling to sales centres further north.

Anyone wanting more details should contact Kerry on 01733 234451 or email kbuttriss@eastofengland.org.uk
