Saturday's Spring Spectacular sale at Leyburn sold to a top top price of £4200 the day's champion from John Smith-Jackson, Haltwhistle.

This one was the steer John picked up the baby beef title at Countryside Live with last year, Super Trouper. This one is by Shire Apollo and is full brother to last year's Leyburn champion and top price Mamma Mia. He sold to Jennifer Hyslop and Andrew Richardson.Leyburn champ.jpg

Second best price on the day was a £3200 call for a British Blue cross heifer which by the look's of the lot number came from Maureen and Bill Orme, this one which stood second in its class sold to Heather Blyth, Norfolk.Leyburn 3200.jpgSelling for £2400 was a Limousin cross heifer from John Smith-Jackson which sold to Jim Courts. And then at £2300 was a Limousin sired heifer from the Ormes which was bought by Alan Hall, Darlington.

Will and Gillian Sedgley, Garsdale then sold a British Blue sired heifer at £2000 to Craig Bentley, while K MacGregor, Berwick, sold a Limousin steer at £1750 to Donald MacPherson. The Ormes then sold another at £1520, this was a British Blue sired steer.

And at £1500 Garrowby Farms, York, sold a Limousin sired steer. The reserve champion, another British Blue cross heifer, this time from Cliff and Ben Moffett, meanwhile sold for £1400.Leyburn reserve.jpg

i am a little unsure why miss hyslop would lead the show champion then buy it. seems odd to me that anyone interested in an animal would help to show it. any thoughts?

MT Jonathan Long

TGFI, as I recall Jennifer has been helping JSJ show his calves for a few years now, so I think it is just a long standing arrangement that she helps on sale day. You may remember the same thing happened last year with Mamma Mia.....

funny that

that was exactly my thoughts! Wonder what is proper price of animal.

Hey JL - Any word of the penrith?!

MT Jonathan Long

Hey Moo, Penrith report just up now - will add to it later when the full report is in, but once again another good day for the Richardsons. Now then FT, I'm sure the auctioneers had payment for the full amount on the Leyburn champion

Thanks JL!

Anyone up for the Over Wintering at Thainstone on Thur?

MT Jonathan Long

Sadly not Moo, can't make it this time around, but feel free to let me know how it goes.

John Smith-J's steer was a cracker and was (in my opinion) worth alot more money I know of 2 people who regret not buying it now-and as for the person who helps show the beast wanting to buy it I would have thought that to be quite natural JH probably knows the quality of the animal better than anyone- and as for people implying this was not the proper price for the animal-do you really think that if there was any deal done that the beast would have been knocked down to the Hyslops at the auction. The animal has been brought to the auction and sold to the highest bidder- better to compliment the JSJ team on another success.

cross calf

sorry to sceptical RS but what do they expect when they do that. The commercial cattle thing is just rotten and this is just another example of you scratch my back, ill scratch yours. There is an auction price but they are so thick together you would not know how much they have paid.Get my drift? All well putting it to a price in sale. How much goes back after?

I do wish Hyslops well with the steer, but dobt envy them trying to make him pay.

In my opinion after seeing video he's "slopey" on plates & not right in his 2nd thigh, But hey what do I know.

speaking from a personal point of view and having purchased fat lambs from JSJ- I still think the last bid could be very near the real price. Cross Calf-did you find the video interesting? I am trying to do alot more of these and would welcome your comments- hope JL does not mind me trying to get feedback.

black limmy man

congrats jsj,2 cattle well sold and all above board.lovely steer,gd luck miss hyslop.nice roan heifer,gd luck mr small.hope to see both out at the highland.

Your absolutley right the steer is far too slopey. I think JSJ was very lucky to win, if the heifer judge had done a better job then either of the two heifers from the Orme stable would of kicked him off top spot! Just look at the prices. Shame the main organisers at leyburn can't support their own show and sale, instead they have to go to penrith to buy.

Mr Small will need alot of luck with the roan heifer when all that fluffy hair falls out and he realises that there isn't much underneath it!!

ShowingFan

Agree with puzzled, was up at Leyburn Friday night, and saw JSJ washing his cattle off, the heifer looked nothing when its coat was flat! but fair enough to the buyer once combed up it looked totally different.

Nevermind how good or bad JSJ cattle were, why hasnt nobody pointed out why have we had another scotch judge at leyburn that has made a complete cock up of judging!!!! Didnt the heifer prices say it all!!!!!!!!

show

IM SURE "puzzeled" can come and see the heifer at anytime and the hair will be down just for him/her, a show calf is not judged in the washbay or the stalls, show potential sales are about picking calves with POTENTIAL so we will know by summer and christmas wether it was all hair or not

thank you for the invite but i'm not too sure why you think i would want to look at that animal again. these animals arn't judged in the washes or stalls but any judge worth his salt will be able to handle that heifer through all that hair. your absolutly right these shows are for potentials (but some have more potential than others!!), i only wish you had told the heifer judge that! well said cuz. p.s. thanks for spelling my name right!!

ANDREW DICKINSON

I was the under bidder on jsj steer the comment about his plates and legs are far off the mark the steer is very good on his legs and i am convinced he will win yorkshire show . I have had few cattle off jsj in past he one of the straightest men to buy off in the country.one question to you all with your negative comments why dont you put your real names on

Yorkie bar

andrew dickinson are you having a laugh arent you. think one or two would disagree.i have watched video too and agree with other comments about steer. Hyslop buying it has been on cards fori while. But dont think think this blog is about discussing people who are straight or not. whos judging yorkshire show then that you are so confident of the steer winning, its a while away yet?
and to your last comment,a blog is nameless - its the WHOLE POINT OF THE THING. Cant handle the heat then dont look at it.simple as.

I have followed the comments on the Leyburn sale with great interest. I was there so feel I can comment. In reply to tgfi, Jennifer Hyslop is a very keen Young Handler, and very capable. She has helped JSJ show his cattle for a while now, dont you think it important to encourage the next generation of young people, I would have thought it fairly abvious as to why she and her family wish to purchase an animal that they have helped to show, it is halter trained and her parents know that it will be a safe sensible beast to show for a teenager, dont you think that is important. Just look at the amount of young, keen kids that are showing now, makes me feel very old! I think JSJ should be congratulated for letting a teenanger show an animal that he thinks so highly of.

Jules

My reply to Cuz, I would think that Donald MacPherson has forgotton more about judging commercial cattle that you would ever know, to make such a comment about a well respected judge and showman show a great lack of respect.

stot

yeah right Jules, whatever.

Hyslops are more than able (don't think they'd appreciate your patronising comments either!)
Keen young kids getting an education in how to lose money is what is happening. What kind of basis is that to get in farming?

Jules

If you think I am being patronising you must be reading the words wrongly, I am just trying to stop the stupid comments attacking the next generation of showpeople, or are you not able to understand that?

I wish that all conversations I started went on as long as this one has but it has been very interesting to see what everyone has to say. the conclusions that I have are that if this tight community wants us to really believe that they don’t stitch sales up then they must stop this nonsense of leading calves then buying them or doing what was done in 2008 by Vance and co. imagine paying £3000 for a beast at Carlisle and then selling it for a fortune a few months later back to its breeder at Smithfield (do they think we are all thick) I want a clear run at showing and selling and until all this stops none of us will get that.
To the comment about the judge making a hash of it who knows if he was right or wrong but time will tell and I would never bet against that family getting too much wrong.

real bull

lot of people ar so stupid and havn got a clue!! macpherson are one of the top showman!

ANDREW DICKINSON

Ian Wildgoose is judging the yorkshire show. The steer will be twelve o clock by then and will suit him i would think. It seems to me a name less comment is a window to slate people's
cattle, integrity and judging ability without any come back on their selves ,if you comment you should be able to put your name to it.

Cuz

I was not knocking the man at all. He is one the big names in the job!!! But all i am saying is why do we need a scotch judge in yorkshire when the type of cattle is totally different. And i wish him best of luck for the forth coming season with that hfr.

In my opinion Mr.Small ent a slow guy. show records speeks for itself!!!!! ryt or wrong! im sure he must see potiental in JSJs wee hefir. about time all this bitchin stoped on this blog aswell.. all these know goods donrt know much i think..........

ooh one simple comment about the heifer been all fluff and people get so defensive!! We'll see who the slow guy is this summer. When the show results come in we'll see who "donrt know much".

mr small hasnt a hope anywere this year with that heifer when you see wat else has been sold lately.

irishfatstocker

I like to see the younger generation getting involved too but is it not better craic breeding a show piece than trying to buy nearly the one as for MR. SMALLS heifer shes a nice colour nd all but would worry about her legs hes

The Smalls may have not won a huge amount of major shows but they are always there abouts. They did have a lot of success with a pure Belgian Blue heifer a few years ago winning the Royal. Their breeding is starting to come through now too with one of their breeding winning the Spring Show at Thainstone... lets wait and see the cattle do the talking!

i totally agree with what you say about breeding them. there cant be much pride in the showing job when they read a show report and have to see who bred it beside their name. now that would lead to a very exciting bunch of winter shows! i would love to see the man or woman holding the halters pride knowing that they are totally responsable from start to finnish for that animal. i have never shown anything that i have not bred and have left a few crackers at home over the years because they where bought.

Dont get me started on that blue heifer! He didn't breed it and what a pig of a thing. What was the judge thinking. Pastellie set the breed back 20 years. None of the top blue breeders have used her blood lines. Oh thats right how many pedigree calves has she bred.... look on the british blue data base!! Theres alot of good breeders out there doing a fantastic job of breeding good cattle without a big song and dance. Anyone can flash a big cheque book about, personally that doesn't impress me.

small's

This has becum sooo bitchy and i do think it shud stop. a lot of snidey comments here.. uncalled for to say the least

MT Jonathan Long

Small's, thanks for that information, as you say it is quite a record. With regard to people's comments here I would remind everyone that they should not submit a comment on this blog that they would not be happy making to the owner/breeder of an animal face-to-face. If you wouldn't say it to them publicly then don't say it here please.

bluenwhite

smalls.

seems to me that you have taken this opportunity to brag, I've news for you - nobody cares!
People seem to forget that this is based on opinion,& get shirty when the opinion does'nt quite agree with theirs.u may also want to have another look at your smithfield stats - think i know of a few scottish famililes who did real well in the nineties & 00's, who dont find the need to come on here & justify and brag. Nuff said.
One things for sure there sure is a few folk amongst this commercial thing that have issues with others, just get a life - concentrate on yourself rather than others.

MT Jonathan Long

Bluenwhite, if you read the thread of comments you will see that smalls was only answering critics of their beast, something they are perfectly entitled to do, as is anyone else who feels they have been unduly criticised. The commercial world is getting very political, but it was ever thus really, perhaps its just rising to the surface more now.

big moo

Why do you all get so angry about the show world, it is after all a shop window for british agriculture . I think it is great that the high priced animals go head to head at shows no longer can anyone say that a very high priced one will win eveything as in general most commercial showcattle are high priced anyway. The people that exhibit them dont need telling that they are going to make a loss on their purchase as i am sure they are well aware of that, the show community is a great place to meet new friends and have a good time. One thing to remember is if you cant stand the heat then get out of the fire,I think its time to stop the silly back biting and get on and get the cattle ready to do battle once again in the great arenas at shows, One thought the commercial showing is only a hobby to most and what price do you put on a hobby.

limmy man

jeeees . . . ive got to say this all the people slagging animals off but . . . your all jealous, i doubt that any of you have had this success like some of these showman have!? who is blueandwhite to slag smalls of, when there blatantly clarifying there fine record, who is puzzled to slag pastelle of, i would just like to know what 1) You have won & on how many occasion and 2) what have you bred that has sold for any serious money? Fair kop someof the money is crazy! but most people deny the fact that they are jealous of other people but deep down they are . . . . im not afraid to admit id love to breed limmys as succesfully as haltcliffe for example. . . truth is it`l be hard . . . . . . .

Cowboy

Puzzled, i have to question how you think pastellie has set the breed back 20 years if as you say no top breeders have used her? I would suspect that the small's have focused more on the commercial job with her than the pures. It looked to be a very stylish corect hfr by her that was jun hfr champ at th Scottish Winter fair. If she has won as many championships as that its obviously not a one hit wonder and that alot of people rated her. I would suggest that there has been a lot of cattle in the past which won top shows and have bred nothing. Prime example has to be the 55,000gns ILC champ, Grahams Samson. the bull has bred nothing bar one 18,000gns hfr a good few years ago. I would say you need people such as the Smalls, Alfords, Sellers etc. If we didnt have people like that in the job, where would we be. You have these guys trying to buy the top cattle, you then have everyone else to buy something to beat them with which drives the commercial prices up. So you then have the commercial men increasingly willing to go well in to five figures for bulls to breed these calves, which helps the pedigree breeders. So i would say it helps everyone!
