Herefords in commercial demand at Hereford

An increased commercial demand for top drawer Herefords saw the first breed society sale in the new Hereford Market reach a top of 6200gns, with pedigree breeders struggling to compete with their commercial counterparts.

Leading the trade was the overall and junior male champion, Solpoll 1 Geronimo, bred by J and W McMordie, Co Down. This Solpoll 1 Dynamite son has a TSI on the top 10% of the breed and was knocked down to commercial organic beef producers D P and G Jones, Machynlleth, Powys.

The second highest price of the day was paid for the senior male champion, Fisher 1 Generator by the successful show bull, Fisher 1 Cracker, from W J Hutchings and Sons, Chichester, West Sussex. He went at 6000gns to G F Harrison, Causeway Herefords, Lakenheath, Suffolk.

And making 4700gns was the reserve overall and reserve junior male champion Romany 1 Gem D1 from J R B Wilson and Sons, Kelso, Roxburghshire. He now heads to Germany, having been bought by Gerty Strohm-Stiftung, Frankfurt, Germany. This was the first son of Danish sire SMH Castro to be offered in the UK and has a TSI in the top 5% of the breed.

Selling at 4000gns was Border Rory G37 from Messrs S W Quan and Co. With this one finding a new home with fellow Herefordshire breeder, Andrew Goodwin, Honeybrook Herefords, Ivington, Leominster.

Another bull heading for commercial work was Dendor 1 Gaffer from D E, E D and A L Jones, Newtown, Powys, when he sold at 4000gns to  commercial beef suckler producers, Portman Burtley Estate, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.

Leading the show females was another from the McMordies, the overall female champion Solpoll 1 Starlet. This paternal sister to the sale topper sold in calf and now joins P Murphy, Wychnor Herefords, Wychnor, Staffordshire.

Mr. Murphy also purchased the second highest priced heifer, the youngest in the Sale, 13 month old Romany 1 Lily, who is by the 2010 and 2011 Hereford Sire of the Year, Baybridge 1 Atlas, selling for 4300 gns.

At 3600gns was in-calf heifer Kinglee 1 Fashion from P Cobley, Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire. She went to M Ludgate, Rempstone Herefords, Thame, Oxfordshire.

The reserve overall female champion then sold at 3250gns, with this being Lowesmoor 1 Winkle 717 from M J Clark, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, She was knocked down to Messrs Prettejohn and Kerslake, Nicholashayne Herefords, Wellington, Somerset.

Averages; 26 bulls £3061.15, 19 show heifers £2191.18
