A smaller entry of 1,200 lambs were reported at Kington market which sold to a more difficult trade than what has been experienced during the year but encouragingly better than the previous days trading.
The lambs are later fattening this year mainly due to the wet weather and auctioneers say they are now seeing more lambs being marketed nationally which has reduced the demand and competition from the buyers. Meated lambs were again at market premiums and Mccartneys are encoraging producers to grade the lambs well at home to obtain higher prices.
Lambs between 32kg & 39kg averaged 1.70ppk up to 1.72ppk Lambs between 39.5kg & 45.5kg averaged 1.68ppk up to 1.80ppk Lambs between 46kg & 52kg averaged 1.67ppk up to 1.72ppk Lambs over 52kg averaged 1.55ppk upto 1.56ppk The lambs sold to £85 per head for some 55kg lambs from PT & EG Williams All lambs sold to a good trade. The lambs were in good demand from the buyers and meated lambs again sold to premium prices.
There was a good entry of 600 cull ewes selling to an easier trade due to a large number of cull sheep being marketed nationally. Meated ewes which are not fat, sold to premium prices. The ewes sold to a top of £109 for some Texel ewes from G V Hardwick and Son and all the ewes averaged a good £60.40 a head with many hill ewes forward. Tups and weathers sold to a good trade and sold to £80 and averaged £65. The cull ewes included a large proportion of thinner mule ewes and smaller hill ewes.
