Lleyn rams sell to 5,400gns at Ruthin
A firm trade was seen in the female section at the Lleyn sheep society sale at Ruthin this week, with a high clearance rate. Rams also sold well, with a strong commercial demand underpinning trade.
Topping the female section was the champion pen of shearlings from JA and R Geldard and Sons, Kendal which sold for £305 a head to the pre show judge Ifor Jones, Abergele. The second prize pen came in next when selling for £200 a head to TJ Ellis. There was over 60 pens selling for £140 a head and above.
Leading the ewe lamb trade was the first prize pen from WJ and DJ Williams, Pwllheli, which went on to sell for £130 a head to D Jones. E and D Jones, Machynlleth, were next to top with £118 to GG and HE Sevenoaks.
The champion ram topped at 5,400gns. Bred and shown by WJ and DJ Williams, Pwllheli, this shearling ram is sired by a Hamish Goldie ram out of a homebred ewe. He was bought by DJ Steen, Lockerbie.
JA and R Geldard & Son, Kendal sold a ram sired by a H Wells ram for 3,000gns to E and D Jones, Machynlleth. Wynne Davies, Pwllheli sold Bronallt Brett for 2,000gns to RV Jones. This was bred out of home bred parents with the sire going back to a JRS & C Burrows ram.
Averages: 1,099 shearling ewes, £137.01; 393 ewe lambs, £81.45; 170 ewes, £122.33; 70 shealing rams, £803.70; six aged rams, £346.50.
