Prices back £10 on the year at Longtown border ewe sale

Trade at Longtown annual border ewe sale was good, despite averages being £10 back on the year.

Leading trade with Cheviot ewes at £150 a piece was Castle Crawford, closely followed by a pen of Cheviots at £142 a head from Stirkfield.

Topping trade for Cheviot shearlings was Drycleughlea at £100 a piece while ewe lambs peaked at £85 for a pen from Potholm.

North Country Cheviots sold to a top of £175 for gimmers from Whitehouse. Ewes from Marwhirn made £102 a piece, while ewe lambs from Lanefoot and Stonecroft made £75 each.

Topping the gimmer trade at £115 and £100 was a pen of Swaledale gimmers from The Gall. Meanwhile Blackfaces gimmers made £110 for a pen from Wanwood Hill.

Included in the Blackface section was the dispersal from Messrs Amos, Broadhaugh, Hawick which met a tremendous trade with a top of £95 for first crop, £84 for second crop, £70 for third crop and £60 for fourth crop, with an overall average of £77.01.

Leading the trade for North Country Cheviot rams at £850 was Messrs Graham’s first prize ram, from Carruthers when selling to P Edmondson, Seathwaite.

Mr Edmondson also bought the next best-priced ram at £600 from Messrs Runciman, Allanshaws.
