Stars of the Future results
Record entries and quality throughout was the order of the day for this year’s Stars of the Future Calf Show, held at United Auctions, Stirling.
With more than 400 calves entered across nine breeds, the event was a fantastic spectacle for the British beef industry, commented event chairman Adrian Ivory.
The first interbreed championship line up of the afternoon with Genus Beef Breeding Specialist Arwel Owen taking centre stage for the judging, saw William McLaren, Blackford, Perthshire, standing senior native champion at the halter of Netherton Blackbird M712. This December 2012-born daughter of Rawburn Rommel E423 is out of the 12,00gns Netherton Lord Jock daughter Netherton Blackbird B172, making her full sister to William’s 2012 Aberdeen-Angus Winter National Show calf champion. This one was second at the Angus Winter National Show at Carlisle and will be appearing in the Netherton show team next summer.
Standing reserve senior native was Mauchline-based Jack Ramsay’s July 2012-born Beef Shorthorn heifer Millerston Gretta Freya, a daughter of the twice Ayr Show interbreed champion and sire of Jack’s top priced heifer in Stirling in October, Pode Hole Beafeater, who was purchased in Stirling in 2010 for 14,000gns. She is out of Millerston Gretta Yvette who has produced bulls to 6800gns.
In the junior natives it was the Aberdeen-Angus breed that was on top form again with Banffshire-based Ballindalloch Farms winning with their February 2013-born Ballindalloch Earl N397. This one is just one of six progeny by the privately purchased Aboyne Munro Prince K191 which was sadly lost due to an infection from a bite. He is out of Ballindalloch Erica H301, a daughter by the homebred sire Ballindalloch Pacific E162.
Then in reserve was the Hereford junior bull Romany 1 Kryptonite from Robert Wilson, Kelso. Born January 2013, this one is one of the first calves by Romany 1 Heavy Duty A84, which was overall champion at the Royal Highland in 2012 and was senior champion at the Stars of the Future Show in 2011. He’s out of Romany 1 Mink E23 H49, the highest performance female in the herd.
In the strong Continental sections, scooping the overall senior Continental championship was the Charolais Glenericht Hilary from Allen and Peter Drysdale, Blairgowrie. Born August 2012 this Clyth Diplomat daughter is out of Mornity Bonnie who was purchased privately. This heifer stood reserve champion at Kirriemuir Show and reserve female at Perth Show.
Taking the reserve spot was a Limousin from John Elliot, Roxburgh Mains. Roxburgh Homeland is a November-born bull is by the 40,000gns Gunnerfleet herd sire Plumtree Fantastic and out of the French bred Nova, dam of the three times Burke trophy winner Samy, she was purchased as a fourteen year old cow and this is her first embryo calf born since then.
The overall junior Continental championship also went to the Charolais breed, this time in the shape of heifer Falleninch Isabella from Andrew Hornall. She is a January born heifer and is the first calf by the €8000 Dereskit Fernando who was interbreed champion at Stirling Show 2013. His dam is the Gower Armani daughter Falleninch Daniella.
Standing reserve to her was Stephen Illingworth’s January born Limousin heifer Glenrock Illusion. Her sire is the 23,000gns Goldies Comet and out of one of the herd’s most consistent females Glenrock Spangle.
In the strong young handlers classes, leading the way in the junior section was James Adam showing a Shorthorn calf, while in the senior section it was Calum Gray showing a Limousin.
