Monmouthsire breeding cattle sale tops at £1,700

An entry of 171 breeding cattle met a much tougher trade than last month, with cows selling to a top price of £1,700 for a 2009 Limousin cow and her March-born heifer calf from J Phillips, Wonastow, at Monmouthshire Livestock Centre last Monday (June 23).

The same vendors consignment also included others at £1,600 and £1,420 and averaged £1,472.

A quality consignment from R M Watkins, Craswall, sold to £1,650 for a British Blue and her Limousin x heifer calf with others to £1,600, averaging £1,478.

D A Evans and Partners, Llanfair, sold to a top of £1,560 for a 2012 born Limousin and her June-born heifer calf, with others to £1,500, averaging £1,385.

G G Davies and Son, Llanvihangel Crucorney, sold to a top of £1,450 for a Limousin cow and bull calf with another at £1,400.

A good run of in-calf cows sold to £825 for a Charolais from IPS David, Peterstone Wentloog, and £800 for a second calving British Blue from G G Davies and Son. A run of Herefords from K J and M J Miles, Llangattock, peaked at £795.

There was plenty of interest in the bulling heifers which topped at £955 for a Blonde from G W and F M Jones, Llanfabon, who sold others at £850 and £830.  Messrs K J and M J Miles sold a run of Herefords to £850, with others at £835.

The breeding Bulls peaked at £2,300 for a 2009 pedigree Limousin from E B Jenkins and Son, Barry. Next at £1,800 was a British Blue from G G Davies and Son.

Averages: 48 cows and calves, £1,301; 11 in-calf cows, £731; 20 heifers, £810; five bulls, £1,420.
