Spring lambs climb to 310p/kg at Longtown

A much larger show of 1,551 spring lambs met strong trade at the Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart, Longtown, Cumbria, last Thursday (5 June).

Topping the prices at 310p/kg were Texels from JR and NG Smith, Westhills, while bidding peaked at ÂŁ136 a head for Suffolks from C Nixon, Long Strumble. The overall average was 257.5p/kg, with stronger demand for heavyweight lambs, as more and more farmers draw lambs at lighter weights.

Good-quality hoggs carrying flesh as well as heavyweight hoggs also sold extremely well. Leading the trade at ÂŁ128 a head were Texels from Messrs Hyslop, West Logan, with a top of 243p/kg for Cheviots from Messrs Smithson, Bloan Farm.
