Royal Welsh Show 2014: Dairy Interbreed Results

It was a Welsh affair in the dairy ring with two west Wales breeders taking the champion and reserve titles under Cornish judge James Warren, Lands End.

In what was a closely fought interbreed championship, Carmarthenshire’s Simon and Sian Davies’ Holstein, Castellhyfryd Spirte Rosina, just pipped the Wilson family’s Jersey, Bluegrass Excitation Prissy Polly, to the top spot.

Today’s supreme win makes it a second for Spirte, having won the coveted title in 2011 and reserve in 2012. This year also marked her third breed title.

Sired by Cederwol Sprite and out of Castellhyfryd Sep Storm Rosina, Spirte last calved in March with her fourth and was shown giving 64kg daily.

Shown by Hefin Wilson, the Jersey Prissy Polly, from Cardigan, Ceredigion, took reserve. This makes the 15th interbreed championship title for the Wilson Family, but it was their first title to date with this Jersey.

Sired by Bridon Excitation she is out of Bluegrass Commanders Pretty Polly and was purchased privately from breeders Barry and Jenny Daw, Hertford Heath, in 2012 for an undisclosed sum. She last calved in April and is currently giving 35kg a day.

Judge James Warren, who has 500 pedigree Guernsey and Jersey cattle, said the line up was as good as he has ever seen anywhere.  He said: “I knew I would be impressed by the quality of cattle and I’m astounded”.

He added:  “There is not much to split these cows, but the Holstein’s udder is just a little bit higher above the hock [than that of the Jersey].”

But he said this took nothing away from the Jersey, adding: “Her udder is phenomenal – her rear udder height, width and teat placement is outstanding.”
