STIRLING BULL SALES 2015: Aberdeen Angus bulls make 13,000gns

Aberdeen Angus bulls saw a top call of 13,000gns at Stirling on Tuesday, with nine bulls selling for five figure sums.

Averages were down £847 on the year to level at £5,260 for 109 bulls sold – still the highest average for the week, with a clearance rate of 64%.

Speaking after the sale, chief executive Ron McHattie said: “Although the average was back by £847, we sold 27 more bulls at this sale. Equally last year saw a stronger interest from pedigree buyers, whereas this year’s sale represented a stronger commercial presence.”

Leading trade at 13,000gns was the junior champion and reserve overall Netherton Kelso N768 from Messrs W and D McLaren, Blackford. This September 2013-born son of the 36,000gns The Moss Mr Eshton D409 is out of a dam by The Moss Florian B284. He is within the breed’s top 15% with a TSI of +39 and SRI of +47.

He was the pick of Messrs AL and D Irwin, Colchester, Essex, for their Bonshaw herd.

Next best at 12,000gns was the reserve junior champion Blelack Dynamite N201 from Neil and Graeme Massie, Dinnet, Aberdeenshire. This June 2013 son is sired by the noted Netherallan Peter Pershoe E052 he is out of Bally heather Dolly Z628 and carries a TSI and SRI of +42 and +53 respectively. Buyer was John Fleming, Glenluce, Newton Stewart.

Two bulls shared the price tag of 11,000gns. First of these was 22-month-old Hallington Jack Eric N398 from Alan and Stephen Lawson, Hallington, Newcastle on Tyne.

Sired by the Netherton Peter Pershore son Hallington Evo L333 he is out of a homebred dam by Blelack Prince Consort A286. He was knocked down to Jonathan and Lisa Doyle, Cookstown, Co Tyrone.

Following him at the same money was the junior bull Haymount Gastessa N379 from Tom Arnott, Haymount, Kelso. This one again stems from Pershore breeding, being sired by his son Skaill Darkness L460, who was purchased privately. His dam Haymount Gastro K058 is the by the 22,000gns Lorabar Blackstar. This one was knocked down to Albert De Cogan, Castlemartyr, Co Cork, for his Mogeely herd.

Mr Arnott also took a bid 10,000gns from Angela McGregor, Aberdeen, for his August 2013 born Halbeath Kansas L429 son Eastfield Juggernaut N559.

Four more bulls made 10,000gns.

First one into the ring was Alasdair Houston’s Gretnahouse Prince Cool N623, from Gretna Green. Sired by Mac Elvis this April 2013-born bull is out of Blelack Princess Caroline and has a TSI of +36 and SRI of +40. He was purchased by FJ Fraser and Son, Forfar, Angus.

Mr Houston continued his good run, also selling the Gretnahouse Blacksmith son Gretnahouse Samson N645 for 10,000gns to PC Stovold and Son, Godalming, Surrey.

Next up and selling for the same money was another consignment from Neil Massie sired by Pershore. Born in June 2013 Blelack Explosion N153 he is out of Blelack Evora Z491. Buyer was Colin J Davidson, Sandwick, Orkney.

Last at this money was Haughton Prime Minister N103 from Whittaker and Co Farms, Cornhill-on-Tweed. This Hallington Evo son sold to PS Johnston, Stomness, Orkney.

Females:

Leading trade at 5,000gns for the collective females at Stirling was Whittaker Farms’ Haughton Jace Erica N096, who sold to Craig Douglas, Clifton Dykes, Penrith. This Blelack Blackbird J160 sired heifer stood reserve champion in the pre-sale show and sold in-calf to Rawburn Boss Hogg. Her dam is Flodden Jace Erica K540, an Easton Greys Elliot A007 daughter.

The best of the draft sales of Aberdeen-Angus females saw Jamie Rettie’s Hillfoots herd first in was Wall Tidy Bee G576. This Blelack Jury Eric C673 sired heifer is out of Wall Tidy Bee D315, a Blelack Blacksmith Y291 daughter and she sold with her Retties JFK M195 bull calf at foot for 5,000gns to Adrian Johnson for his Yearsley herd, York.

Meanwhile the best from the Chathill herd dispersal of Pip and Jane Robson saw a top price of 4,500gns for Chathill Rosebud M668. Sired by the former Royal Highland Show champion Balmachie Keystone G041, she sold in calf to Kitewood Elevator L159 to D Clarkson and Son, Lanarkshire.
