STIRLING BULL SALES 2015: Shorthorn bulls sell to 13,000gns

Beef Shorthorn bulls met a strong commercial demand at Stirling yesterday (Tuesday 3 February), selling to a top of 13,000gns.

Overall 56 entries averaged £5,066, down £391 but for five more entries sold outside the ring.

Breed society secretary Franks Milnes said strong commercial demand from many new faces underpinned trade. He added: “Well grown, well-muscled bulls accompanied by Breedplan data met a ready trade.”

Sale leader at 13,000gns was Balgay Gorgoroth TI +18, SRI + 10, a 23-month-old roan by the 13,000gns Chapelton Braveheart and out of a Chapelton dam from Balgay Farm’s 50-cow herd based at Inchture, Perth.

Led out by farm manager Mike Riddle and his wife, Jackie, the couple took their best price to date. The first prize winning Gorgoroth went to Killearn, Glasgow, with Campbell Graham. He joins his 650 cow suckler herd which includes 350 pure Beef Shorthorn.

The day’s second highest call at 10,000gns went to Fearn Godfather TI +23, SRI +28, a dark roan 23-month-old from Farmers Weekly Sheep Farmer of the Year 2014 John Scott, Ross-shire. Sired by the 10,000gns Dakota of Upsall and out of a homebred dam from their Tain based 65-cow herd, he was snapped up by MD McMillan, Luncarty, Perth. Altogether their three entries averaged 7,166gns.

Three entries made 9,000gns. First at this money was Meonside Granville, TSI +31, SRI +19, from Frank Moffat East Meon, Petersfield. Sired by Chapelton Covenanter he is out a homebred dam. Buyer was Aucheneck Estates, Killearn, Glasgow.

Mr Moffat also realised the same price with Meonside Ganster TI +31, SRI +24 from Frank Moffat. This 22-month-old roan is by the 4,000gns Glenisla Zetor. He was knocked down to David and Rosemary Dickie, Sanquhar, Dumfries.

Minutes later, the Dickies recouped their spend when they offered their first prize winner, Knockenjig Glenturret TI +31, SRI +28 for sale at 9,000gns to D Hodgson, Chathill, Alnwick.

This 21-month-old light roan by Meonhill Charlie Chaplin is out of a Gregors bred dam from their 25- cow herd.

Lagas Gigolo TI +24, SRI +21, a 23-month-old dark roan by Rowanberry Donatello, from Laga Farms, Evie, Orkney made 8,000gns when selling to to WS Robson and Son, Otterburn, Newcastle.

Then it was back with the Balgay herd as another Braveheart son, this the 22 month old roan Balgay Gorbadoc TI +29, SRI +23 sold for 8,000gns to Glenkiln Farms, Crocketford, Dumfries.

Five entries shared a 7,500gns bid.

First to go was the senior and overall reserve champion, Pode Hole Gladiator TI +20, SRI +20, a two-year-old red and white by the 10,000gns Chapelton Clansman and out of a homebred dam from Charles and Sally Horrell’s 55-cow herd based at Thorney, Peterborough. He returned south with PW and ES Willison, Cuckney, Mansfield.

LEP Farms were again in the money at 7,500gns with Meonhill Gangman TI +12, SRI +11, a 23-month-old red and white by their homebred Meonhill Highland Beau. Buyer was J Ines and Son, Huntly, Aberdeen.

Fearne Farm achieved their second highest bid with the 22-month-old roan Fearn Great Glen TI +15, SRI +10 by Meonhill Highland Captain. He headed to Lauder, Berwick with W Barr.

Two entries from Castle Douglas based Donald Biggar’s string of entries sold at 7,500gns each. Chapelton Galaxy TI +37, SRI +33, a 23-month-old red Chapelton Typhoon son sold to C Nye, Ely, Cambridge, whilst Chapelton Glen Clova TI +32, SRI +28, a 22-month-old by the 6,800gns Glenisla Banquo went home with J and C Gibb, Glenisla, Blairgowrie.
