Tory tops trade at 5,000gns at Carlisle

The February Border and Lakeland Pedigree sale day took place at Carlisle last Wednesday (18 February) peaking at 5,000gns with an overall average of £1,781.

Topping the trade at 5,000gns was Lomond Windbrook Tory consigned by Jane Steel, Glasgow. Tory was placed second in the heifer class and awarded reserve champion by judge Gilmour Lawrie, owner of the prize winning Brieryside herd in Ayrshire. Tory was bred from the famous Wilsondale Triuna cow family and will be the tenth generation of Excellent or Very Good cows. She now joins the Logan herd of Brian and Michael Yates, Castle Douglas.

Next highest and third in the milking heifer class was Wormanby Goldfish Glorriette.  This Goldfish daughter was bred from seven generations of outstanding cows all classified in the top two grades.  She sold for 2,800gns to Holehouse Farms, Ayrshire.

Matthew Armour, owner of the Annandale herd and widely known as the UK’s leading breeder of top Holstein bulls sold a number of very milky well-bred heifers.  Topping this impressive consignment was Annandale Mizuno Liga. Sired by A L H Mizuno and bred from the Lou Etta family originally from Walkup, this heifer sold for 2,400gns to T. Forsythe, Wigtownshire.

The overall champion was Espland Jordan Nancy consigned by DI and AA Cannon, Appleby.  She is sired by Gillette Jordan and bred from a Picston Shottle dam.  She sold for 2,300gns to Barr Farm, Fife.

Heifers of less quality received a noticeable drop this month selling for or close to the £1,000 bracket.

Averages: Two cows in milk/calf, £1,581.30; 56 heifers in milk/calf , £1,781.85.
