Well-hung superstar son delights bidders at Carlisle Beltex sale

The Beltex Sheep Society’s opening sale of the season at Carlisle saw strong demand from both pedigree and commercial breeders, with an increase in the number of sheep sold on last year and three five figure sales.

Trade reached a high of 16,000gns in the shearling ram section, with the top price paid for Black Jack Well Hung from Ross and Kirsty Williams. By Todhall Superstar, well-hung is out of Black Jack Pipa, a Ballydown Magnus daughter. Taking this one home was Paul Slater, Macclesfield.

Next in the money was another shearling ram, this time from Andrew Baillie. Callacrag Wise Crack is a Muirton Toy Boy son and out of a Clary Navy daughter. He sold to Allan, Cami and Ali Jackson at 13,000gns.

Leading the ram lambs with a 12,000gns bid was Matthew Burleigh, with Matt’s Abracadabra, a Hackney Warrior son out of Matt’s Professional, a Beechtree Nightrider daughter. This one sold to Harry Wood, Dutton, Lancashire.

It was another shearling ram that secured the next top price with a 9,500gns bid for Broughton Willie Wonder. Consigned by Mary Dunlop, this Padkin Sugar Daddy son out of Broughton Sahara, sold to David and Matthew Prince, Chesterfield, Derbyshire

Rory Gregor’s sole ram lamb entry Gregor’s Achilles repaid the faith he had in it, selling for 9,000gns. He was a Kingledores Wordsworth son out of an imported dam and sold to a five partner consortium of John Barclay, Jim Kennedy, Andrew Morton, Messrs Sinclair and A Ireland.

Selling at 8,000gns was the best of the sale from Stuart Wood, Woodies William. This one is by Todhall Supreme and out of an imported ewe and sold to Richard Wood and family for the Kingledores flock. He also secured 5,000gns for Woodies Awesome, a Glenkeen Sanders daughter out of a Belgian ewe, and selling to Messrs Evans.

Next in the money were the Buckle family when selling Plumtree Wonderful. This Ardstewart Super Mario son is out of Whatmore Ruby and was knocked down at 7,500gns to Tom Sayer.
Stuart Wood then took 6,000gns for Woodies Wicked, a full ET brother to the 8,000gns Woodies William.

Paul Tippetts then sold his best at 5,000gns. This was Hackney Wonderboy, a Scooby Doo son out of Hackney Star, with this one selling to Matthew Burleigh, Northern Ireland.

Shearling ewe trade was led at 5,000gns by the overall champion from the pre-sale show, Buckles Watercress from Kevin and Rachel Buckle.By the 2014 Royal Highland reserve champion Broxty Supreme and out of Jocund Du Chene, she was knocked down to Andrew Wood.

At the same money was one from Richard Wood, Kingledores Wistful. This Glenkeen Sanders daughter is out of a Viagrow daughter and sold to C Birrell and Co, Castle Douglas.

Averages; 675 shearling rams, £931.02; six aged rams, £1,254.75; 191 ram lambs, £1,090.87; 250 shearling ewes £705.60 (Harrison and Hetherington).
