Trueman Jagger sets new £147,000 record at Carlisle Lim sale

Limousin world records were smashed at Carlisle on the weekend (Saturday 17th October) when Irish breeders Henry Savage and Sons, Newry, Co Down, sold the supreme champion Trueman Jagger for 140,000gns (£147,000).
This April 2014 born youngster was a hotly tipped favourite ahead of the sale, having won the male, reserve overall and junior interbreed championships at Balmoral Show earlier this year, and he didn’t disappoint, attracting an opening bid of 50,000gns. An embryo calf, Trueman Jagger is one of the first calves born to Ampertaine Gigolo and is out of the noted Trueman Grazia, a Haltcliffe Vermount daughter. He has grown at a phenomenal 2.47kgs/day since Balmoral.
Purchasing the bull for the new UK and European all-breeds record was a five way syndicate made up of Michael and Melanie Alford, Foxhillfarm; Paul Dawes, Dinmore herd; Messrs Jenkinson, Whinfellpark herd at Penrith; Gareth Lee, Calogale herd in Carmarthenshire, and Kedzlie Farm, Swalesmoor herd, Lauderdale.
Commenting after the sale Henry Snr said he was a ‘once in a generation bull’, adding: “To sell him for a world record price is the stuff of dreams and something that you would never expect to realise.”
On the day 85 bulls averaged a new UK all-breed record of £8709 – up some £3200 on the year.
Iain Kerr the British Limousin Cattle Society’s chief executive said the prices showed the strength of demand there is for quality Limousin bulls.
“Top pedigree prices aside, there was depth in the sale and to set a new all-breeds record average of over £8,700 for a good number of bulls is remarkable and a great credit to the breeders.”
Setting the second highest price of the day at 45,000gns was the reserve overall champion Ampertaine Jamboree, from James McKay, Upperlands, Maghera, Co. Derry. Also sired by Ampertaine Gigolo, he was born in April 2014 and is out of the Wilodge Cerberus daughter Ampertaine Fifi. Buyer was the Ronick herd, Mains of Throsk, Stirling.
Next best at 24,000gns was the junior champion Ballinloan Jaegerbomb from Stuart Fotheringham, Ballinloan, Dunkeld. Another bull with a summer show track record, Jaegerbomb is sired by the herd’s stock bull Ampertaine Foreman and is out of Ballinloan Frutella, a Neuf daughter, whose breeding goes back to the noted line of Newhouse Ibetha. Purchaser was Ian Handley, Ingleton, Lancashire.
Stephen Nixon, Southfield, Wigtown, made 22,000gns when selling Huntershall Jeronimo to the Spittalton herd of Andrew Burnett, Blairdrummond, Stirling. Jeronimo is by the noted sire Requin and is out of Huntershall Dancer.
Bruce Goldie’s five-bull line up from Mouswald, Dumfries, grossed 57,500gns. His bestseller at 20,000gns was Goldies Jurassic, an April 2014 born bull, who stood second in his class to the record breaker. He is by the homebred Goldies Fortress, a full brother to the 22,000gns Goldies Fandango, and is out of Goldies Elisa, an Ampertaine Bravo daughter. He sold to Procters Farm Ltd, Slaidburn, Clitheroe, Lancashire, with some excellent growth figures and a beef value of LM+47.
James McKay was back in the bidding when he sold Jeronimo for 19,000gns to the Loosebeare herd of Messrs Quick and Son, Crediton, Devon. Born in July 2014 he is by the AI sire Plumtree Fantastic and is out of the Cloughhead Umpire sired Ampertaine Eureka.
The strong run for Northern Irish breeders continued when the reserve junior champion Craigatoke Jack, from Martin Conway, Plumbridge, Omagh, sold for 17,000gns to the judge Kevin Bohan, who manages the Ardlea herd of Dan Tynan, Co Laois, Eire. By the French bull Sablier, a Jacot son, Craigatoke Jack is out of Craigatoke Ant, a Haltcliffe Underwriter daughter.
Haltcliffe Johnny, from the Haltcliffe herd, Hesket New Market, Wigton, sold for 15,000gns to the commercial producers JA Wood and Sons, Ratlinghope, Shrewsbury. He is the first calf born to the sire Haltcliffe Gentry and is out of the Cloughhead Umpire sired Haltcliffe Grape.
Trueman Jukebox from the Savage family made 12,000gns when selling to G Cameron, Acharrade, Argyll. This senior bull, who had stood second in his class to the reserve senior champion, is by the AI sire Ampertaine Elgin and is out of the Nenuphar daughter Trueman Gabrielle.
Senior champion Haltcliffe Jonsson from the Haltcliffe pen continued a fine run when making 11,500gns. This February 2014 born bull is by Haltcliffe Gains and is out of the Sympa sired Haltcliffe Ulrica. Buyer was commercial producer Grant Laing, Grantown on Spey, Morayshire.
Ampertaine Gigolo was again to the fore when Bruce Goldie sold his son Goldies Judge for 11,000gns. He stood first in his intermediate class and is out of the Wilodge Vantastic daughter Goldies Glamour (a full sister to the prolific Goldies Comet). Buyer was WC Mably Farm Partnership, Pipers Pool, Launceston.
Ampertaine Jupiter from the junior section made 10,500gns for James McKay. The July 2014 born bull is another by the AI sire Plumtree Fantastic and is out of the Cerberus sired daughter Ampertaine Felicity. Buyer was S and GA Potter, Thirsk, North Yorkshire.
The final bull to sell for a five-figure sum was Stuart Fotheringham’s Ballinloan Jericho, which made 10,000gns when selling to pedigree breeders Smiths of Bloxham, Bloxham, Banbury, Oxfordshire. By Ampertaine Foreman he is out of the Nebo Dynamite daughter Ballinloan Gabi.
