Winter weather aids trade at Bakewell

The first spell of wintry weather last weekend (21 November) concentrated minds and sharpened appetites resulting in a decent trade for all the 478 cattle and 2,249 sheep on offer at Bakewell.

The finished cattle ring saw a significant increase in numbers to 119 and a very satisfactory trade with top figures of 250p/kg and ÂŁ1,530 a head.

Over thirty months numbers were also well up with 141, with a solid trade prevailing – the best on offer to 180p and top gross £1,094.

Store cattle numbers have started drying up with only 184 forward, although some decent lots were forward report auctioneers Bagshaws. Heifers reached ÂŁ1,200 and steers ÂŁ1,255.

A decent sample of breeding cattle with in-calf Hereford cows sold to ÂŁ780.

The cold weather kept the calves at home with only 34 venturing out, although there was plenty of demand with bulls selling to ÂŁ392 and heifers ÂŁ324.

Lambs were in demand for the 1,475 forward. Prices reached 198p and ÂŁ103.70.
