Borderway Simmental heifers twice reach 5,000gns

Strong pedigree interest twice saw highs of 5,000gns for Simmental females at the Leading Ladies sale at Carlisle on Friday (22 April).

Leading the trade was Champion and Reserve Champion Corksie Enita from WJ&J Green, Fochabers, Moray and Midhope Entise from WJ Hollingsworth, Midhopestones, Sheffield, with trade down on the year levelling at £3,517.50 for maiden heifers, £1,200 down on 2015.

The red ticket winner was a Delfur Chas daughter out of Corskie Anita and sold to DC Houldey, Waterbeck, Lockerbie. She is rated +80 and +82 for 400 and 600 day weight and the first of several money makers for the Corskie herd on the day.

Also making 5,000gns was Midhope Entise, knocked down to P Jolliffe, Oakmore, Staffordshire. Sired by Delfur Chas 11 and out of Midhope Champagne, Entise boasts calving ease values of +0.4 for direct and +0.5 for daughters.

Next in the money was Corskie Easter at 3,600gns, knocking down to N Shan, Methlick, Ellon. This Corskie Bowen 10 daughter is out of Corksie Autumn and estimated at +66 for 400 day weight.

Bulls

Selective commercial bidding hit highs of 4,700gns for the day’s champion, Midhope Farmer’s Friend, selling to Auchencheyne Ltd, Thornhill. The November 2014-born son of Midhope Bloom is also by Delfur Chas 11, bringing progeny weight scores of +39, +71 and +81 for 200,400 and 600 day weights and a carcase weight score of +55kg.

Next at 4,600gns was Corskie Flynn, a Dirnanean Bradley 10 son out of Corskie Bonnie, knocking down to Newbottle Estate Farms, Brackley. Flynn brings calving ease scores of +5.7% direct and +2% for daughters, combined with a carcase weight score of +41kg.

The Greens were then back in the ring selling to 4,400gns with Corskie Fries, also by Dirnanean Bradley 10, which went home with J Muir & Son, Mouswald, Dumfries.

Lancashire-bred Denizes Fortune then made 4,200gns for MA Barlow, Leyland. This November 2014-born son of Auroch Ace is by ET out of Denizes Trixie-Belle 3 bringing positive calving ease figures and rated +65 for 400 day weight.

“The cream of the heifers all went to pedigree herds, with good trade for breedy-type females,” British Simmental chief executive Neil Shand told Farmers Weekly. “It was not a vintage show of bulls and an entirely commercially driven bull trade saw bull buyers be the more selective on the day.”

Averages: Eighteen bulls, £3,348.33; eight served heifers, £3,517.50, five maiden heifers, £2,005.50, unhaltered females, £1,680.
