Heifer tops 5,000gns at Parkhead reduction sale

The reduction sale of cows and heifers from the Parkhead herd of pedigree Ayrshire and blended red and whites, saw a good crowd of buyers attend Beeston Castle Auction.

Buyers were in attendance from central Scotland and south west Wales, to see the reduction of H Tinker & Sons' herd, Ashes Farm, Wentworth, South Yorkshire.

And it was a heifer, Parkhead Wren 6th (VG7-2yr), which achieved the top price on the day of 5,000gns.  A daughter of the stock bull Marleycote Eddy, this one is milking in her first lactation, having calved in July and is back in-calf to Middle Hybrid.  She sold to Phil Reed, Blaenannerch, Cardigan for his Rhos herd.

Another leading price on the day was 4,700gns for Parkhead Sonia 4th.  This second calfing daughter of Marleycote Ladies Man, gave almost 10,000kg during her first lactaction.  She calved in March and was bred back to Marleycot Winton Robbie.  This one goes to the Marleycote herd of Richard Baynes, Hexham, Northumberland.

Meanwhile, the second calfing Parkhead Jody 3rd (VG86), sold for 4,400gns to Richard Danforth, Tadcaster, West Yorkshire; and local buyer Geoff Benson of Tarporley, bought Park Head Tartan Glove 5th (VG88) (Ex-MS) for 4,000gns.

AVERAGES: 159 head of cattle sold to an average of £1,711.30.  This comprised 114 cows and milking heifers averaging at £1,833.91, and 45 served heifers averaging at £1,400.70 (Auctioneers: Wright Manley of Beest Castle Auction, Cheshire).

Record entry numbers and a record sale price of 5,000gns was achieved for one of the Ayrshire breed's top young show cows at the third Northern National Ayrshire Sale and Show held at Harrison and  Hetherington's Borderway Sale Centre, Carlisle.

The show and sale included 79 entries comprising heifer calves, milking heifers and cows as well as an impressive entry of 11 young bulls. Topping the sale at 5,000gns was Halmyre Urr Jinks VG88, 3rd Junior Cow at The Royal Highland Show, Edinburgh, 2011 and 1st Junior Cow, Champion Ayrshire and Reserve Champion Dairy Interbreed, Dumfries Show 2011.

Bred and owned by L Davidson and Sons, Castle Douglas, and fresh since May 2011, Jinks was 1st place in the Almins Cow in Milk class and was Reserve Champion overall. Judge Geraint Thomas's admiration for the three-year-old was evident in the pursuing sale with the final bid taking Jinks to his renowned Gwynnog herd, Carmarthen, Wales

Cuthill Towers Kyles Lady took 1st place in the Red and White Heifer In-milk class and was awarded Champion overall.  Bred and owned by A and S Lawrie, Cuthill Towers, Kinross, Scotland and fresh since September 2011, the stylish two-year old exhibited a superb udder and cleanness throughout.   

Sired by Morwick Kyle Red, Lady's second dam carries more Morwick bloodlines being sired by the famous Morwick Sand Ranger Red; she sold for 2,400gns to Messrs Galbraith, Sunny Bank.  Commenting on his placement reasons Judge Geraint Thomas said: "The Champion is a lovely balanced young cow with a little more dairy character owing to her stage of lactation."   

Dairy trade hits 3000gns at Lanark

Friday's inaugural Technicolour show and sale of dairy cattle at Lanark saw a brace of 3000gns calls lead the trade with the first at this money the overall champion from the Hunter Family's LetterKenny herd, Shotts.

This one was Letterkenny Bullion B, a Firsth Bullion daughter. The other at this price was the third prize senior heifer in milk from Messrs Armour, Annandale.

Then selling at 2850gns was the reserve overall champion and first prize junior heifer in milk, Overside Shottle Peach 3 from W W Neilson, Strathaven. She's a Picston Shottle daughter.

And then making 2650gns was the second prize heifer from the same class, one from Messrs Steel, Kepculloch. Third in this class, one from Messrs Neilson, Overside, then sold at 2300gns, as did a senior heifer in milk from Messrs Ralston, Rhoin.

Best of the day in the Ayrshires on offer was a 1950gns bid for the first prize heifer from Messrs Millar, Caldervale, while the top priced Jersey was a heifer from Messrs Hunter Clydevalley, at 1800gns.

Averages; 17 Holsteins £2467.50, seven Ayrshires £1575, five Jerseys £1522.50 (Lawrie and Symington).

Acton Ayrshires reach high of 9000gns

Last week's dispersal of virtually the entire Acton herd of Aysrhisre and the Actonfarm herd of Holsteins for John Tomlinson saw an electric trade for the tremendous bloodlines on offer, with a top price of 9000gns paid.

Selling for the day's best price was Ayrshire cow Acton Saltire Peggy, an Ex92 classified cow by Stevensons Saltire which had been breed champion at Cheshire and Newport Shows this year.

She was sold milking with her third calf having calved in April and was PD'd back in‐calf to
Rosehill Blackthorn; she was one of seven daughters of the fifteen year old Ashmansworth Peggy 191, five of which were in the sale. The purchaser was Philip Williams of Leweston, Haverfordwest.

And the underbidder on the top priced lot, Tracey Martin of Torrington, Devon, paid the next best of 7100gns when buying a granddaughter of Ashmansworth Peggy 191.

This was Acton CBC Peggy, a VG86 milking heifer who calved in June. She is by Carnell Bright Crown,

The third top seller was Acton Princess Poker, a VG87 July calved daughter of McCornick Nelson milking with her third calf and out of an Ex90 daughter of Bankend Lord Ontario. She went at 6100gns, being bought by Steve Oultram for his Stamford Herd at Ewloe, Flintshire.

Then at 3400gns was Acton Mandella Peggy 2, a Hunnington Mandella daughter out of Acton Shottle Peggy. She went to Geoff Benson, Tarporley.

 An at 3200gns Jessie Bostock, Biddulph, Stoke‐on‐Trent, purchased Acton Jubilant Punch, a Brieryside Jubilant Scot daughter out of Killoch Punch.

Following that at 3100gns was Acton Jubilant Rita, another by Jubillant Scot and this time out of Acton Rita 2, a Stamford First Prize daughter. She found a new home with Blaise Tomlinson.

Also at this money was Acton HVG Princess Poker, a Hidden Valley Garth daughter out of Acton Princess Poker which sold to H W Oultram and Co, Flintshire.

Holsteins

Best of the day in the black and white offering was a 4400gns bid for Actonfarm Outside Beatexus 3 an Ex90 daughter of Comestar Outside out of Actonfarm IVAnn Beatexus. She went to Peter Waring for his Winton Herd,  Beverley, East Yorkshire, giving 46kg a day.

Colin Brassington, Roden, Telford, then paid 4000gns for Actonfarm Shottle Beatexus. She's by Picston Shottle and out of Actonfarm Grandslam Beatexus 5.

 At 3600gns Steve Philipps, herd manager for Andrew Walley's Cottonabbotts herd, Waverton, Chester purchased Actonfarm Outside Beatexus 2, another by Comestar Outside.

And at the same money was Actonfarm Shottle Ann, a third calver by Picston Shottle which went to Redgate Farming, Peterborough. Mr Brassington was back in the bidding then, paying 3500gns for eight week old heifer calf Actonfarm Talent Beatexus, a Ladino Park Talent out of 4400gns cow Beatexus 3.

Averages; Ayrshires, 37 cows and milking heifers £2718.08 (including one bull Calf at £262.50 and nine heifer calves at £1417.50); four served heifers £1693.12; 11 maiden heifers £1656.14; Holsteins, nine Cows and milking heifers £3476.05 (including 1 bull calf at £840.00 and eight heifer calves at £1758.75); four served heifers £2100.00; 10 maiden heifers £1706.25 (Wright Manley).

First DELS cow breed championships decided

The first of the breed championships has been decided here at the NEC, with the British Friesian championship going to the Lawson family with their Lismulligan Priscilla 41. This is by Deangate Prince 2.792011 British F Champ.JPGReserve to her was Oakalby Breadwinner S Ruth 34 from the Burroughs family, she is a Grove Breadwinner daughter.

Then in the Ayrshire classes the champion was Gwynnog Sand Ranger Sailorgirl from Geraint Thomas, she's a Morwickn Sand Ranger Red daughter.792011 Ayshire Champ.JPGStanding in reserve was Millford Jungle Girl 77, a McCornick Nelson daughter from Alan Timbrell.

The second Ayrshire in-milk class of the day has now been placed, with the first prize ticket going to Millford Jungle Girl 77, a McCornick Nelson daughter from Alan Timbrell. In second spot was Haresfoot Simply Red Pamela from S P R and L Reed, a Forte Simply Red daughter.

Then in third place was Millford Lark 20 from Alan Timbrell, with this being a Horizon Ranger Red daughter, in fourth place was Roshill Prickly Jean from W R C and J E Christophers, a Rosehill Blackthorn daughter and in fifth was Heydale Ovoid 242 from D W Berresford and Son, she's by Heydale Blizzard.

And in the British Friesian second class of the day the winner was Oakalby Breadwinner S Ruth 34 from the Burroughs family, a Grove Breadwinner daughter. Second place in this class went to Lismulligan Gay 67 from Brian Lawson, she's by Blackisle Benromach.

And the second class of Brown Swiss has just been completed too, with the winner in this class being Kedar Becks Alice, a Kedar Becks daughter from T Lochhead and Sons, second place went to Kedar Seattle Glenda from T Lochhead and Sons, a G S Prophet Seattle daughter.

Then in third was Highlight Proview Roseanna from R and S McColm, an R Hart Protein Preview daughter, with Farrick Dino 2 from J and C West in third, she is by Red Kite Sam.

Holstein takes DELS interbreed heifer championship

The Holstein in-milk heifer champion, Berryholme Golden Flo from the Wright family, Francis, Anne and son, David, has just taken the interbreed heifer championship here at the NEC.692011 Holstein Heifer Champ.JPGThis Goldwyn daughter calved in February and is currently giving 36kg a day. She has had one previous outing, standing heifer champion at Cartmel Show. Her back line is full of breeding, with her maternal sister being National Holstein champion last year and her dam national Holstein Show champion in 2003. She is one of 110 milkers in the Berryholme herd.

Standing reserve was the Ayrshire heifer in-milk leader from Chris and Lisa Window. This one, Hunnington Fragrance 55 was led in the ring by Lisa's husband Paul Walker and is a daughter of Castern Tornado.692011 Ayshire Heifer Champ.JPGShe is calved four months and has previously been interbreed heifer champion at Nantwhich and Oswestry. Giving 32 litres a day she is one of 90 Ayrshires currently in milk in the Hunnington herd.

The exact same placings were repeated in the exhibitor bred championship, although it was a close call in the main championship, with the Ayrshire and the Jersey both collecting a total of 42 points from the panel of judges. However, the Ayrshire claimed reserve spot on the basis of earning more full mark 10s from the judges.

First DELS in milk classes judged

The first of the in-milk heifer classes are underway here at the NEC, with the Ayrshires first in to the ring.

Taking the red ticket in their in-milk heifer class was Hunnington Fragrance 55 from the Window family. This one is a Castern Tornado daughter. Second to her was Rosehill Prickly Indiana from W R C and J E Christophers, with this by homebred sire Rosehill Blackthorn.

In third was Haresfoot Napier Punch from Geraint Thomas, with this one being by Ardmore Crown Napier. Fourth spot went to Barr Easter Trixie from T Crawford and Co, a Haresfoot Brazen daughter and in fifth was Sandyford Jungle Girl 4 from E T Tomlinson and Son, she's by Cogent Retinue Red.

The Brown Swiss were next in with the milking heifers and the winner here was Kedar TD Reia from T Lochhead and Sons, this one is by Webster Ridge. Second place was taken by Soulseat Zola Marion, a Kedar Pronto Zola daughter from R and S McColm.

In third in this class was Sedgemoor Diablo Dream Toni from Brian Miller, she's by Arthurst Garbro Diablo. Then in fourth place was Kedar Scipo Fabiane from the Lochheads. She's by Paezza Denm Earn Scipio, with fifth place falling to Quarry Scipio Liz 2, another Scipio daughter.

Holstein takes Royal Norfolk dairy title

In yesterday's dairy interbreed the overall title went to the Holstein champion from Robert Paterson and family.

This was Airfield Lorenzo Cora, a Lystel Lorenzo daughter out of Airlfield Shottle Cora. Second calver Cora gave 10,921 in her first lactation and is classified VG89. She is bred from eight generations of VG or Ex dams.2962011 RN Dairy Champ.JPGStanding reserve overall was the Ayshire champion from Richard Bown. This was Loukat Lucky, an Adrossan Kates Trident daughter out of City View Pansy. Holstein wins dairy Interbreed at Royal Highland

It has been all go here in the dairy lines with all the breed classes and the interbreeds judged already.

Taking the overall title was the Holstein champion Saxelby Goldwyn Rose from Robert and Elaine Butterfield. This Braedale Goldwyn daughter is classified EX93 and was interbreed champion at last year's Great Yorkshire Show as well as reserve breed champion here last year. She is out of Saxelby Aaron Rose.2362011 RHS Holstein.JPGReserve overall was the Ayrshire leader Calderglen Silverbell 7 from Robin Barr. This 2005-born fourth calver is by Calderglen Jubilee.Highland Ayrshire.jpgIn the junior championship the title went to Robert Hunter with his Jersey Clydevalley Governor Flora, a Griffens Governor daughter. Standing reserve to her was the Holstein junior, Blythebridge Elegant Christable from Blythebridge Holsteins. She's by Blythebridge Elegand Dundee.

The reserve Holstein championship went to Brian Weatherup with his second calver Parkend Jacob Betsy, a Bilsrow Jacob daughter. Reserve in the Ayrshires was Halmure Urr Floralin 144 from L Davidson and Son.

Winning the Jersey championship were R and W Templeton with their 2007-born cow Skyhigh Ressurection Veronica, a Rapid Bay Ressurection daughter. 2362011 RHS Jersey.JPGReserve was Robert Hunter with his cow Clydevalley Julian Flora.

And taking the Dairy Shorthorn championship was Stephen Girvan with his 2005-born cow Bishopsbrae Royal Kathleen, a Hooton Fair Appeal daughter. Standing reserve to her was Adam Lawson with his first calved heifer Lisnamulligan Whitetail 2, a Meadowhaven Pride's Starr daughter.

Cumbrian YFC calf champion makes £1260

Harrison and Hetherington conducted the sale of calves to conclude the Cumbria Young Farmers Clubs Interclub Suckled Calf Wintering Competition, where all the proceeds were donated to the Great North Air Ambulance.

The 12 calves had been purchased during the autumn calf sales in 2010 in auction markets operated by Harrison and Hetherington who financed the purchase of the calves. 

All the calves were halter lead and extremely well presented to the master judge Steadman Dodd, West View, Temple Sowerby, Penrith.  He awarded the rosette for the best animal in the show to Kirklinton YFC with a superb British Blue cross heifer.Email YFC champ.jpgThe reserve champion was presented to Brampton YFC with an 11 month old British Blue cross steer.  

The main objective of the competition was to make the greatest margin possible between purchase and sale price and this achieved by Kirklinton YFC with their 13 month old British Blue heifer selling for £1260 leaving a margin of £530. 

This was closely followed by Penrith YFC with their 15 month old British Blue heifer making £1140 leaving a margin of £515.  Penrith YFC were also awarded the special rosette for the Best Turned Out Animal and Handler.

Bellas take strong bids at Haresfoot dispersal

A pair of Bellas have helped keep the average up at the Haresfoot dispersal with a mother and daughter combo selling at 5500gns and 9000gns.

First to go was one of the herd's great show cows Haresfoot Bella 6, a February 2000-born daughter of Horizon Ranger Red out of Haresfoot Bella, a Bankend Lord Ontario daughter.

This one is an eighth lactaction cow with siz 10,000kg+lactations and was breed champion at the Royal in 2003, breed champion and interbreed production champion at the Royal in 2004, reserve supreme interbreed and exhibitor bred champion interbreed at the Royal Welsh 2005 and interbreed champion at the Dairy Event in 2006. She is also dam of bulls Haresfoot Brazen and Blaze.

Her daughter Haresfoot Maple Bella, a November 2010-born Remington Maple daughter then sold at the day's best so far of 9000gns.

8000gns takes another top Haresfoot milker

Selling for 8000gns at Beeston in the Haresfoot dispersal was Haresfoot Jordan Barbara, a November 2004 Ex92 classified daughter of Ja-Bob Jordan Red out of Calderglen Barbara. This fourth lactation cow was sold in-calf to Palmyra Tri-Star Reality and has three milkings at 10,000kg and above including her ongoing fourth which stands at 10,634kg in 262 days.

More Haresfoot Ayrshire dispersal highlights

The young heifers are certainly proving popular at the Haresfoot sale today, with a 7300gns bid securing Haresfoot Remington Ella, an ET bred July-born heifer calf. This Mapleburn Remington daughter is out of Haresfoot Ella 47, a Cuthill Towers Autumn Gold daughter and an Ex94 classified dam. She was also All Britain junior cow in 2005 and gave more than 10,000kg in five of her seven lactations, including her seventh at more than 11,000kg. This one went home with Peter Berrysford.

Her 2006-born maternal sister then sold at 5500gns. This was Haresfoot Ranger Ella 2, a Horizon Ranger Red daughter out of Haresfoot Ella 47. She last calved in February 2010 and gave more than 12,000kg in her second lactation, she sold in calf to Mapleburn Remington.

Then making 7200gns was her daughter Haresfoot Brazen Ella, a daughter of homebred sire Haresfoot Brazen. This first calved heifer was born in August 2008 and gave 27.4kg at her first recording after calving in January. This one sold to Philip Read.

Pamelas draw top bids at Haresfoot dispersal

A brace of Pamelas have taken the top two bids of the day so far at today's Haresfoot dispersal, with Haresfoot Enigma Pamela selling for 8500gns, while her daughter, Haresfoot Remington Pamela sold at 8800gns.

Enigma Pamela is an April 2006-born Ravenhill Enigma daughter classified Ex91. This third calver gave more than 10,000kg in her second and last calved in October, giving 6329 in the first 141 days of her third lactation. She has previously been reserve interbreed heifer at the Dairy Event in 2008 and sold having been AI'd in December to Palmyra Tri Star Burdette.

Remington Pamela is Enigman Pamela's October 2010 born heifer calf by Mapleburn Remington.

Haresfoot Simply Red Pamela sells at 5100gns

One of the early highlights of today's Haresfoot Ayrshire dispersal, Haresfoot Simply Red Pamela, has just sold at 5100gns.

Unquestionably one of the star lots of the sale Simply Red Pamela is a Forte Simply Red daughter out of Haresfoot Pamela 3 and has an impressive show record, including being  All-Britain calf champion in 2006, reserve breed champion at the Dairy Event and South West Dairy Show in 2009 and supreme interbreed at the South West Dairy Show last year.

Last calved in July last year she sold today still giving 24kg a day and having given 8187 in 219 days of her third lactation. Buying her was Philip Read.

Today's Haresfoot Ayrshire dispersal

As many of you avid dairy fans will know today sees the Haresfoot Ayrshire herd dispersed at Beeston for Duncan Hunter.

Unfortunately,with a baby due any day now I can't be there myself to see this tremendous herd of cows sold, however, I do have a spy or two heading to Cheshire today, so I'll endeavour to keep you updated as and when I can.

Here's hoping for a trade to reflect the quality which will undoubtedly be on offer.
