Blondes top 6000gns at Carlisle

| 3 Comments | No TrackBacks

If ever a breed deserved more support it's the British Blonde. Prices at last week's breed society sale at Carlisle topped at 6,000gns for Shanvalley Fletcher from Savage Bros and Son's herd in Co Down and there was another bull - Stubbswalden Endeavour - from the Jackson family's herd at Doncaster that made 5,000gns.

But there were only eight bulls sold to average £3,766. There was a time when the Blonde was up there with the big three Continental breeds and sires such as the imported doubled muscled-bull Abricot looked set to secure the breed's future. Even though the Blonde-cross cow has been a big success for many suckled calf producers, the Blonde still seems to be in an undeservedly sticky patch.

This week a breed record of 11,000gns was made for Blonde bull Shanvalley Fighter.

Shanvalley Fighter who weighed 1008kgs at just 20 months had caught the eye of the McCabe Brothers at Balmarol show in May 2011; where he took Junior Male and Overall Junior champion as well as Reserve Male Champion for the Savage brothers.

_MG_8595.jpgFighter continued with seven more male champions and an overall Blonde Champion and two Interbred Champions this summer.

A private sale was made to the McCabe Brothers from Downpatrick, County Down this week. Jim and Maurice McCabe who run 115 suckler cows, mainly Limousin and Blue crosses have bred Blondes in the past said: 'We are delighted to have purchased this young bull, he has got everything we have been looking for in a Blonde and more. What this bull has done since we first saw him in May is staggering, and we are glad to have kept this young bull here in Northern Ireland'.
