Wyevalley Connections sale

Breeders from Devon, West Wales, Somerset and neighbouring counties assembled at Ross Market for the sale of Eryl and Eirian Done's entire heifer crop from their first class Wyevalley herd. They were joined by five consignments from fellow breeders with connections to the herd - pics to follow soon.

Leading the bidding was the outstanding yearling heifer Wyevalley Dellia Darlene ET PI, a Shottle daughter whose sister topped the last Wyevalley sale at 3200gns in 2004. Her dam was an 88 point Duster with 11,164kg in her 3rd lactation - a grand daughter of the world renowned Snow-N Denises Dellia EX-95, the mother of Regancrest Elton Durham. She stays in the county with local breeder D J Smith of the Wennetune herd.

Smiddiehill top at Lancaster

Lancaster, once a Mecca for Holstein sales, savoured some of its former glory last week when a star-studded entry and three tempting consignments produced 11 bids over 2000gns and a top price of 6000gns.

Reminiscent of this centre's hey day, the market was crammed with 200 head of cattle including 20 lots from the Smiddiehill herd that were guaranteed to entice even the most hard-pressed milk producers into some springtime spending.

The Smiddiehill cattle levelled at £2500 and not surprisingly included the day's 6000gns entry. Smiddiehill Roman Thelma couldn't fail to impress with her stature and style. At 27-months, this freshly calved daughter of Bosside Roma Roman is out of the twice 12,000kg-plus Smiddiehill Lucente Thelma.

Beeston Holsteins

Tuesday's sale at Beeston Castle consisted of the Nivelle and Northernline Herds of Pedigree Holsteins, following a change in direction of the business of R & A Ryan of Forncett St. Peter, Norwich who have decided to accept a new share farming opportunity with Sir Nicholas Bacon of nearby Raveningham.

This change in business development involved them taking a proportion of their herd with them; in so doing they decided to take most of the older cows and all the young stock leaving the younger part of the milking portion of the herd for sale.

Prior to this new development in their business, last year they embarked upon on an expansion plan and part of this was the purchase of the entire Stibbard Herd from North Norfolk and it was cows carrying this prefix that dominated the leading bids of the sale.

National Holstein Show, a newcomers view

A trip to yesterday's National Holstein Show, was I have to admit one of the few things in life I felt I could really do without.

As a sheep farmer with a leaning to beef too, spending the day surrounded by hoards of black and whites never has been my idea of a fun day out. However, the dairy industry really must be congratulated on putting on tremendous show.

Assembling more than 350 cattle of one breed in one place is quite a task and one which the show organisers appeared to take in their stride.

Everything ran to time and never was a cow or handler out of place. A lesson many summer shows would do well to learn.

Record day at Holsworthy

The good weather last week must have drawn the crowds out to pack the ringside at Holsworthy market, as Kivells auctioneers have just reported one of their best trading days since 2000.

Wednesday saw over 2500 livestock entries with just over 1000 head of cattle. Trade was excellent, with some 220 dairy cattle forward, with 45 of those fetching in excess of £1000.

Kivells head of dairy department Mark Bromell reckons this level of interest and transactions made reflects a buoyancy in the current market, a trend I'm sure the market is keen to see continue.

Suddon dispersal - end of an era!

Newfailand dispersal hits 3000gns

The dispersal of Jones family's noted Newfailand Holstein herd at Bristol - following two major herd reductions over the last seven years - produced a top price of 3000gns for a third calver from the herd's well known Carol family.

The need to completely refurbish the farm's dairy accommodation prompted the dispersal which followed the sale of 80 cows in 2000 and another 98 cows in 2001 to re-stock the Bridge End herd after foot and mouth.

The sale topper was from the herd's well known Carol family. Newfailand Rubens Val Carol gave 11,000kg as a heifer and is out of a 13,600kg dam by Formation. In-calf to Regancrest Dolman - and described by the vendors as "a dream of a cow" - she heads for Carmarthen with buyer Mr Thomas.

Western Holsteins hit high spots

Demand for top quality, well bred Holsteins is still high and in some cases exceptional and this month's Western Holstein Club sale at Beeston was no exception. Trade was even stronger than last month levelling 60 heifers at £1252 and producing a top price of 1600gns.

Once again it was Shrewsbury-based breeders Mick and Jean Gould who topped the entry with the calved heifer Woodmarsh Jackson Akregloss 135 after taking the reserve championship under judge Jeremy Platt of the Lachstone herd. By Weeton Jackson and out of a 15,200kg dam by Rudolph, she stays in the Midlands with Mike Heath, Newport.

Collecting the tricolour were Wem herd owners Brian and Leonora Whitfield with Alderbarrow Storm Cortje - a fresh second calver by Maughlin Storm. She realised 1500gns to Aubrey Greenhalgh buying for a Fife-based client.

Matching the bid at 1500gns was Doveland Talisman Trixy from G and A E Smith and Sons, Preston. Buyer was E M Gregory, Glossop. A third 1500gns call secured Woodmarsh Lucente Dorothy 7 taken by J Hocknell, Holmes Chapel.

A consignment from Peter Rutter's Bardell herd at Nantwich reached 1700gns for a fifth calver by Outside taken by local bidders M and J Hassall and Sons,

Averages: 60 heifers £1252; 15 cows £1107 and 16 bulls £1112. (Wright Manley).

A great crowd of breeders and commercial milk producers descended on Rackery Farm, Burton, Nr. Rossett, Wrexham for the sale of the entire milking portion of Andrew and Jenny Jones' noted Rossett Herd, auctioned by Wright Manley.

Cheviotview dispersal hit 14,000gns

There was no way herd manager David Jones was going to let anyone get in his way when he went on a spending spree to add even more jewels to the Sheikha Alkhalifa's Sahara Holstein herd. At last weekend's dispersal of Andrew Hodge's noted Cheviotview herd at Borderway Mart, he claimed the three most sought after lots paying a total of 32,800gns to include the day's highest priced lot at 14,000gns.

cheviotviewsmall.jpg

Moved from its home at Duns, Berwickshire, the Cheviotview herd presented 289 head to both colour factions of Holstein aficionados. And it was the March-calved heifer Cheviotview Talent August - bred out of the red-and-white Kepculloch Rubens August Red - that stirred the ringside into action late in the day.

Despite a battery of determined bids from many of her admirers who had seen this heifer head the junior heifer in-milk class at the National Holstein Show this year, David Jones maintained his resolve and secured her for the Sheikha Alkhalifa's herd in Monmouthshire. She had been recorded giving 38.8kg after 29 days; her dam had topped 12,200kg with her third.

Re-stocked after foot-and-mouth, the Cheviotview herd had assembled a wealth of exciting cows from deeply bred families which offered many showmen the chance to snap-up sure-fire winners for the coming season.

Charollais and Charolais dominate Suffolk championships

Suffolk show as always proved its worth as a true farming show this week, with strong livestock entries in all sections and large farming crowds thronging the judging rings.

Continentals ruled the championship rings as a Charollais ram took top honours in the sheep rings and a Charolais cow rearing twins scooped the beef interbreed silverware.

The sheep leader cam from Jonathan and Carol Barber's Crogham flock of 120 ewes and was bought two years ago for 600gns in conjuction with Stuart Dudley of the Hyde flock.
Scrivphoto%20Interbreed%20Sheep%20Champion.jpg

Bred in Northern Ireland, the tup is by noted sire Southam Bob the Builder and out of a Mawhinney ewe, he previously stood interbreed at last year's Royal Norfolk Show and has been used extensively in both the Crogham and Hyde flocks.

Reserve spot in the sheep lines was taken by the Suffolk champion, a ram lamb from Gordon and Elizabeth Beddie's flock from Swaffham, Norfolk. This January-born lamb had stood first in a strong class under breed judge Helen Goldie before beating off stiff competition to clinch male and breed championship.

In the beef rings the leader was seven year old Charolais cow Moathall Roney from the Wicks family's 80-cow Moathall herd from Mellis, Eye, Suffolk. Roney who was shown with her twin calves at foot was described by judge John White, of Midlock, Biggar, as having an exceptional head and superb topline.
Scrivphoto%20Beef%20Interbreed%20Champion.jpg

Standing second to Roney was the Limousin leader, Segala from Doug Mash's Brockhurst herd. Five year old Segala was imported from France last year and now heads on to Rutland, East of England, the Royal and the Royal Welsh.

And the Charolais also triumphed in the interbreed pairs competition, beating off stiff opposition from the Belgian Blue pairing to lift the title.
Scrivphoto%20Char%20Bull%20%20Cow%201.jpg

But the Blues did one better taking the group of three title - from the Barwood and Padfield team came Ridge Dean Sherry, Ridge Dean Wren (both with their two heifer calves) and the homebred bull Piggots Artful Dodger.

In the Native championship it was a win for the Aberdeen Angus heifer of Andrew Brown, Hawstead Lodge Pamela.
Scrivphoto%20Native%20Breed%20Champion.jpg

Meanwhile, the dairy championship was dominated by traditional breeds, with the Jersey leader standing champion ahead of the top British Friesian.

Bolderston and Partners' 2002-born cow Tetfor Hall Danni lead the way having calved in April and given 40kgs a day at the peak of her last lactation. Danni runs as part of the partnership's 80 cow mixed herd alongside Ayrshires and Holsteins.
Scrivphoto%20Dairy%20Champ.jpg

Following closely behind was 2000-born British Friesian cow Oakalby Breadwinner S Ruth 34 from the Burroughs family's Beccles-based herd.

Taking the Dexter title for the fourth year running was Roseamry and Stuart Creasey with their February 2005 born heifer Langley End Alison, a heifer that had taken the title the year before.

Scrivphoto%20Dexter%20ChampionBLOG.jpg

Among the pigs it was another interbreed success for Guy Kiddy's Withersfield herd of Large Whites. Taking the honours for Mr Kiddy this time was his July 2006 born gilt Withersfield Blackberry 151, shown by Shuttleworth college student Stuart Warby.

Charolais and Charollais clinch Three Counties titles

Charolais cattle captured both the individual and pairs interbreed championships at the rain affected Three Counties Show.

Conditions were so bad that interbreed cattle judging was moved inside, where judge Jim Goldie found himself assessing a Limousin bull he bred.

Having made Shamleys Victoria, an outstandingly well grown Charolais heifer from Mrs Jamilla Robinson's herd at nearby Tenbury Wells, his champion, he called on independent referee Martin Jones to decide whether Goldies Trophy should be reserve champion. The bull he sold to Somerset breeder Colin Hutchings three years ago for 6000gns, was given the nod.

Quality on offer at Weeton Holstein dispersal

The Holstein world may be getting short of the mega-spenders but the sort of deep and solid bidding that levelled 198 lots at £2852 at this week’s Weeton herd dispersal was a heartening reflection of a black-and-white world back in hands of true breeders.

A bumper crowd headed for the Fylde in Lancashire where John and Doreen Loftus saw their star-studded offering generate 46 bids over 3000gns - but the top two calls of 6800gns and 6500gns sent both cattle to Annan to join Paul Rawcliffe’s Almond herd in south-west Scotland.

He was quick off the mark early in the day and his 6800gns nod secured Weeton Shark Trolley. This La-Poe Shark daughter out of a Lee dam that made 3500gns at the herd’s 2002 sale, had given 10,915kg in the first 241 days of her second lactation and was AI’d in August to Wilcoxview Jasper.

Milk price hopes see Holsteins hit 3250gns at Hallworthy

South west dairy farmers produced a sizzling trade for a strong entry of Holstein dairy cattle at the annual Christmas Cracker show and sale held at Hallworthy Stockyard in Cornwall.
