A Bluefaced Leicester ram was awarded the title of Native Lowland Champion. This was the first show outing for the one year old tup having been purchased at
A homebred Ryeland ram from Mr and Mrs D and S Lewis, 3 Picton Close, Narbeth, secured the reserve spot. This one is by Ruslin Champion - a sire bred by the judge, Richard Wear.
In the Continental Championship, it was Charollais ewe, Elmwick Isobel taking the top spot. She is a Sarkley Grand Prix daughter and was put forward by Jennifer Curtis, Paddock View, Wickhamford.
This is the last outing for the ewe this season, having also secured the interbreed title at the Royal Bath and West Show earlier in the summer. She is one of 150 pedigree ewes owned by Ms Curtis, along with 50 commercials.
In reserve was a Rouge ewe from Percy Tait, Broughton Manor, Worcester, shown in the ring by Will Price.
However for his overall interbreed champion, Mr Wear went with his native pick, making it a first ever interbreed win for the Hill Radnor in the Royal Welsh's sheep ring.
This one won supreme interbreed champion at the Staffordshire Show and the breed championship win at the Royal Welsh takes his running total to 19 championship wins for the breed. He is the main stock ram to the Radnor's flock of 130 registered Hill Radnors.
Judge Richard Wear said: "This is a five year old, active ram that has obviously got a lot more years in his life. He is true to type with excellent conformation and walks exceptionally well for an older ram."
Having had a Charollais walk away with the title for four years since 2004, it was a good day for the native breeds. However, the continental breed still shined through, with Ms Curtis's ewe taking the reserve spot.

It wouldn't be the Royal Welsh without a bit of rain and we are certainly getting our fair share of drizzle. As usual, a very strong entry of livestock with more than 3,000 sheep forward, 784 beef cattle and just over 900 dairy.
The classes are well under way, and i'll keep you up to date with the individual breed championships and interbreed champs when they happen. It looks like it will be Wednesday before most of the main championships, but the supreme beef class is taking place at about 4pm this afternoon.

From a total of close to 4000 entries the sheep interbreed came down to a climax of just three section champions in the running for the overall title.
And, after a marathon 1.5hr judging stint judge George Hughes found his champion in the Kerry Hill leader, a three shear tup from John, Phillipa, Hannah and Ellie Owens. This one is by a tup the family own in partnership with Howard Jones' Plash flock and was bred in Mr Jones flock and then bought at the breed's Ludlow sale as a shearling.
He is one of the sire team run for the family's 60 ewe flock of Kerry Hills run at home at Shobden, Herefordshire.
Taking the reserve overall title was the Berrichon Du Cher champion, another old tup, this time a two shear from Malcolm and Kathy Yeo's Swincombe flock. This one, which was bought from Builth tup sale as a lamb from Jack Chamberlain, is by a tup bred in the Swincombe flock.
Mr Hughes said the Kerry Hill was everything he wanted in his champion. "He had flesh, length a great fleece and unlike many of those out here today he moved exceptionally well. Overall he was a great show animal."
Taking the reserve in the native upland section was the Northg Country Cheviot tup from Wyn and Siwan Harries, while the reserve in the Continental category was taken by the Blue Texel tup from Dan and Janine Jones.
In the Native Lowland championship the winner was the Jacob shearling ewe from the Phillips family, while reserve was the Clun Forest tup from A L Smith.

It was the turn of the native breeds to dominate in the the interbreed sheep pairs championship here at the Royal Welsh, with all eight of the final short list being native breeds.
Taking the final top spot was the Ryeland duo, both of which came from David Lewis' 35 ewe flock which runs alongside 160 pedigree Dorset ewes and a pedigree herd of Charolais cattle and a commercial suckler herd. This duo were a homebred shearling ram and shearling ewe. They were reserve interbreed pair at the Three Counties show earlier in the year.
Reserve pair were the Poll Dorsets, both of which came from Colin and Tom Clark, Devon. The male in the duo was a Ballytaggart two shear ram which was bought for 900gns when he was champion at the May Fair in 2008. Joining the tup was the female champion, a shearling ewe by another Ballytaggart tup.
Judge Mrs Chilman said the Ryelands were a perfectly matched pair and said there had been nothing in the Continentals on show to tempt her, despite many ringsiders feeling the Rouge pair would have featured in the final line up.

The overnight rain has cleared here in Builth Wells and we may just be lucky to miss the rain this morning, but the forecast isn't so good for the rest of the day.
Today see's the remaining sheep breed classes judged, and the attention in the cattle rings turns to the dairy breeds, with all the breed classes and interbreed done this morning.
Reporting from today will be a tad delayed though as I have the honour of judging the Southdown classes here this morning, so will be tied up with that for a few hours before I can get back to the computer and bring you the results. Here's hoping for another day of strong classes in all the breeds on show later......
