Beef Shorthorn back in ring

NEW and established Beef Shorthorn breeders took advantage of the first offering of pedigree beef cattle to be sold through the sale ring at Perth this week since the foot-and-mouth outbreak and twice took bidding to 1500gns.

The sale comprised the annual draft from John and Alistair Gibbs noted Glenisla herd, traditionally brought to Perth during the October bull sales.

First of the 31 heifers to reach 1500gns was Glenisla Margo R33, a 92% pure roan heifer due in April to Glenisla Rowantree. The heifer, by Ingleton Hutton, was bought by W Landers, Newton Stewart.

Sharing the top call was Glenisla Foxglove Tansy R47, another roan in-calf heifer due in April to Glenisla Range and sired by Dunsyre Mercenary. Buyer, Mr Baillie of Kirkby Tore, Penrith, will have to wait until stock can be moved into Cumbria before he takes delivery.

Other in-calf heifers reached 1300gns, with maiden heifer trade up to 1450gns given for another daughter of Mercenary claimed by the Biggar family. They selected several maiden heifers including entries at 1200gns and 1300gns for re-establishing their famous Chapelton herd lost in the early days of the F&M crisis in south-west Scotland.

The sale included Luing and Sim-Luing heifers from Glenisla. In-calf Luing heifers sold to £920 with maiden Luing and Sim-Luing heifers reaching £500.

The Crofters Commission, Knocknagael, Inverness, consigned an entry of heifers with calves at foot and achieved a centre record for a commercial outfit when a black Limousin heifer and smart bull calf realised £2500. Buyers were Messrs Cameron, Fort William. &#42

Another Limousin cross heifer suckling a heifer calf made £1900 with a Simmental-sired heifer and bull calf at £1150 (United Auctions).
