Lincoln Red event backs local breed
LINCOLN young farmers are supporting their local breed with a Lincoln Red heifer rearing competition, now in its third year.
Members take responsibility for rearing, feeding and training pedigree Lincoln Red heifers belonging to local breeders and present them in a special class at the Lincolnshire Show. Here heifers are judged on their conformation and the young farmers on their showmanship.
The heifers are later sold with 60% of the sale price going to the breeder and 40% to the young farmer to cover his or her expenses. The young farmers also receive £25 appearance money.
Ten young farmers took part this year and the winner was Martin Dennett of Spilsby YFC with a heifer from R I Clough & Son. Martin also received the prize for the best presented heifer. Ed Bourne of Billinghay YFC with a heifer from C L Bembridge was second; Sally-Anne Laming of Corringham YFC with a heifer from R & J Burtt was third and Andrew Straw of Market Rasen YFC with a Limestone Farming Co heifer was fourth.
At auction the winning heifer went for £600, the Corringham heifer fetched the next best price at £550 and the average was £474.
