Private sale sets new Beef Shorthorn record

A private sale for a bull from Donald Biggar’s Chapelton herd has set a new breed record of £16,000 for a Beef Shorthorn.

The bull, Chapelton Covenanter, is a son of Chapelton Typhoon out Chapelton Duchess 690. This makes him a full brother to 13,000gns bull Chapelton Braveheart which sold at Stirling in February. Covenanter was reserve junior champion at last week’s Royal Highland Show where he was sold.chapelton convenator.JPGMarch 2009-born Covenanter was bought by the underbidder from February, Syd and Mary Chaplin for their Meonhill herd. He has a terminal sire index and a self replacing index in the top 1% of the breed and is also in the top 1% for 200, 400 and 600 day weights.

Commenting on the sale Mr Biggar said the bull combined performance, looks and pedigree in a complete package. Another full brother was shown at the Royal Highland suckling his dam and is already attracting interest from overseas buyers who are in the UK for the breed’s world congress.
