Records broken at Exeter Lleyn sheep sale

LLEYN Exeter 2012 - DN Bennett & Son 4700gn shearling ram web.jpgIt was a day of records at last week’s Lleyn Sheep Society Annual Sale of registered Sheep at Exeter.

In the rams, records were made and then broken within minutes.  D W and C F Morris sold the champion ram sired by homebred Penywern Ableman for 3,700gns to C G and J F Phillips, Gloucestershire.

Moments later Robert Bennett of Powys sold a ram sired by  Laga Performer, a Laga Farms Ltd ram for a new centre record of 4,700gns to the pre-show judge Dylan Jones.  The dam, a Bankhall ewe, was the twin to Plasucha D162 which sold for 2,300gns in Ruthin in 2005.

A new class for 2012 was the individual shearling ewe class which was won by A W Hughes, Gwynedd.  His homebred ewe was later sold for a centre female record of £500 to R and J Twose, Carmarthenshire.  Mr J Dufosee of Warminster stood second and sold for £210 to Cator Blackaton Farming, Devon.  The third prize came from D N Bennett and Son, Powys and sold for £200 to Collacombe Farm, Devon.

In the pen of shearling ewes section D N Bennett and Son topped the price scale with £210/head for five shearlings selling to Collacombe Farm.  A W Hughes followed with £202/head when selling to the same purchaser.

There was 100% clearance in the shearling ewe section.  In the ewe lamb section 22 pens were over £100/head and in the shearling ewe section 49 pens sold for £150/head and over.

Other highlights in the ram section included A W Hughes selling a two shear ram bred from Gwyn Evans ram for 900gns.  61 rams sold with 15 selling for 1,000gns and over.

The ewe lamb section was dominated by J M and G C Adams selling their pen of five for £170/head to N J Cowan, Paignton.  The first prize pen from A W Davies sold for £155 to H Geen, Devon.
