Island life

The Outer Hebrides is no more than a place on the shipping forecast to most people...Gale Force 8 veering westerly.

I’ve never got closer to it than the island of Arran which was beautiful, great for seal watching and, contrary to what I'd been warned, not infested with midges (the wee beasties, as they’re known).

If you want to get a flavour of this magical part of the country, though, you don’t have to travel there. Between March 1 and Mar 30 you’ll be able to at the Royal Photographic Society in Bath.

It’s hosting an exhibition of 30 black-and-white photos by Monica Weller who’s travelled the 700 miles from her Surrey home to the Hebridean Isle of Harris every year since 1991 to produce portraits of crofters, shepherds and fishermen.
