People who fancy trying their hand at shooting but don't normally get a chance will get the ideal opportunity soon, with National Shooting Week kicking off on May 26.

More than 200 public open days are being organised by shooting schools and clubs, meaning the public will be able to try the sport in a safe and friendly environment.

The government-backed initiative, organised by the British Shooting Sports Council,.is aimed at those who have never experienced target shooting before.

Find out where your nearest event is by going to the website.

"The initiative is all about people experiencing a popular sport that Britain is actually good at, so give it a shot!" urges organiser Robert Gray.

He points out that at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, shooting accounted for 23 of the UK's 116 medals - and the sport is set to have a huge role in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Robert's comments made me think... For someone like me - who spent their childhood dreaming of Olympic success, but was and still is lazy and unfit - maybe shooting was the route we should have taken!
