Now Then Lad...

I get sent a lot of books that are - eeer, how shall I put this delicately - not exactly my cup of tea. Actually, let's be honest here: that look rubbish.

But one's arrived today that I can't wait to read. It's called Now Then Lad... by Mike Pannett. It's an account of his life as a rural policeman in North Yorkshire - he went to the patch after years of tackling armed robbers and drug gangs in London and the book is billed as a cross between Heartbeat and something by James Herriot. Sounds hilarious.

Hi there,

I'm an author of a book I dare not send you, having seen what a harsh critic you are, but you may like to check out 'A Place in My Country: In Search of a Rural Dream'. If it's rubbish please don't tell me!

The real reason I am writing is to ask whether you would give some profile to a non-profit hobby of mine: www.farmblogs.blogspot.com

I am a big fan of farmers' blogs, and I got frustrated at spending too much time trying to find good ones and then forgetting to bookmark them.

So, I've started www.farmblogs.blogspot.com

I've put a link to you on this site.

All I ask is that you send me a brief email to info AT ianwalthew.com with a few words about your blog AND your own favorite farmers' blogs.

I then make a brief posting, add your recommendations, contact the blogs you recommend, and so it goes.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Ian

Andy:

Regarding "Now then Lad", if you haven't read it yet, how do you know whether it's any good or not? Is it because of Alan Wilkinson?

There are so many references to James Herriot - originated soley by the author himself and his friends and family who are writing rave reviews on the internet. It is getting quite obvious that this book is being overmarketed.

The book is OK but should not be classed as a biography or memoirs as it is a complete work of fiction.

It's a fair enough read but Heartbeat has already been done!
