Snail farmer Martin Downes will be at the Grand Local Producer Fayre on September 20-21 at La Hogue Farm Shop near Newmarket.

Martin, of Rutland Fine Foods, will be showing live breeding snails (there will be a special "Guess The Weight" competition in aid of a lcoal hospital) and giving the public free tastings.

The event is part of the British Food Fortnight celebrations, which kick off nationwide on September 20.

Other stars of the fayre will be the award-winning Hereford cows, Bonny and Clyde, from the local Badlingham herd, who will be making a special appearance on both days.

About 50 local food and drink producers and farmers will be in attendance, giving free tastings and information on their products together with recipes and cooking guidance.

"British Food Fortnight is a fantastic opportunity to highlight the wealth of excellent food and drink producers we have in East Anglia," says Chris Reeks, who owns La Hogue with his wife Jo.

"This event is extremely important to those small artisan producers who don't supply supermarkets and we are delighted to be hosting what will be an interesting and fun weekend."

Funnily enough, it was La Hogue that I got a delicious pork pie from just the other day.
