It's 'ruff' learning to read

This 12-year-old English terrier can read.

Willow obeys written commands - she loves playing dead when she sees the word 'bang' and will stretch a paw in the air when she sees a note saying 'wave'. She'll hunker down and beg the moment she sees 'sit up.'

Willow knows she'll get treats in exchange for tasks, but if you put different numbers of dog biscuits in each hand she can even pick out which hand has more or less.

Animal trainer Lyssa Rosenberg recognised she'd found a pet-in-a-million when Willow was just a pup. She picked up tricks so quickly that it became a standing joke that she could do anything she was asked.

She's adopted rabbits and guinea pigs and can sing and sneeze to order, then five years ago Willow learned to read. It took her just six weeks to recognise outlines and respond to them.

"She's an unbelievably quick learner," said Lyssa, who has trained other dogs to appear in TV adverts and pose on photo shoots. "She can do 250 different things and I used to joke that I would teach her how to pour me a martini.

"Then for a bet I told a friend I would teach her to read. He promised me a free trip to Mexico if I could do it.

"It took her just six weeks to recognise words and respond to them. And it isn't just my handwriting she understands. My friend printed the words Willow learned off the computer and she reacted to them.

"Well I won the bet and Willow came with me to Mexico.

"She also loves music. We met singer Dave Matthews on a train recently and she charmed him. Then we were on the front row at his concert the other night and Willow had the crowd in stitches by reaching out for the drum sticks and waving."
